چکیده

Developing an effective turbulence model is important for engineering applications as well as for fundamental understanding of the flow physics. We present a mathematical derivation of a closure relating the Reynolds stress to the mean strain rate for incompressible flows. A systematic multiscale analysis expresses the Reynolds stress in terms of the solutions of local periodic cell problems. We reveal an asymptotic structure of the Reynolds stress by invoking the frame invariant property of the cell problems and an iterative dynamic homogenization of largeand small-scale solutions. The recovery of the Smagorinsky model for homogeneous turbulence validates our derivation. Another example is the channel flow, where we derive a simplified turbulence model using the asymptotic structure near the wall. Numerical simulations at two Reynolds numbers (Re’s) using our model agrees well with both experiments and Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent channel flow.

Multiscale Analysis and Computation for the Three-Dimensional Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations

In this paper, we perform a systematic multiscale analysis for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with multiscale initial data. There are two main ingredients in our multiscale method. The first one is that we reparameterize the initial data in the Fourier space into a formal two-scale structure. The second one is the use of a nested multiscale expansion together with ...

Computational study of incompressible turbulent flows with method of characteristics

Turbulent flows are the most applicable cases that in recent years the researches have been focused on developing of solution methods. Incompressible turbulent flow is one of these cases which need to be taken in account. Solving the incompressible Navier-stokes equation because of elliptical characteristics has been led to some researches in this field recently. The ACM of Chorin [1] as a pre-...

Finite element approximation of turbulent thermally coupled incompressible flows with numerical sub-grid scale modeling

The objective of this work is to describe a variational multiscale finite element approximation for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the Boussinesq approximation to model thermal coupling. The main feature of the formulation in contrast to other stabilized methods is that we consider the subscales as transient and orthogonal to the finite element space. These subscales are solut...

Incompressible Turbulent Flow Simulation Using the κ-ε Model and Upwind Schemes

In the computation of turbulent flows via turbulence modeling, the treatment of the convective terms is a key issue. In the present work, we present a numerical technique for simulating two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows. In particular, the performance of the high Reynolds κ-ε model and a new high-order upwind scheme (adaptative QUICKEST by Kaibara et al. (2005)) is assessed for 2D ...

Stochastic Superparameterization and Multiscale Filtering of Turbulent Tracers

Data assimilation or filtering combines a numerical forecast model and observations to provide accurate statistical estimation of the state of interest. In this paper we are concerned with accurate data assimilation of a sparsely observed passive tracer advected in turbulent flows using a reduced-order forecast model. The turbulent flows which contain anisotropic and inhomogeneous structures su...
