Endtidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) is the measurement of CO2 in exhaled respiratory gases and serves as an estimate of arterial CO2. ETCO2 is measured by a capnograph in a mainstream or sidestream method. A normal capnogram has four phases: phase 0, the inspiratory downstroke; phase I, the expiratory baseline; phase II, the expiratory upstroke; and phase III, the expiratory plateau. Complete evaluation of a capnogram includes determining the shape and value of the four phases and measuring the alveolar to end-tidal CO2 gradient. Thorough evaluation gives a clinician information about a patient’s state of perfusion, ventilation, and metabolism as well as equipment malfunction. Further veterinary studies are needed to determine the role of capnography in monitoring anesthetized patients, assessing response to treatment, diagnosing disease, and deter-

Description of an assembled noninvasive capnography setup.

BACKGROUND Noninvasive capnography is not routinely available on portable transport patient monitors but can be useful in respiratory monitoring of spontaneously breathing patients during transport, especially when sedation is administered. We describe an assembled setup of face mask capnography. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and performance of an assembled face mask c...

Capnography sensor use is associated with reduction of adverse outcomes during gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures with sedation administration

BACKGROUND Evidence to date suggests that capnography monitoring during gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures (GEP) reduces the incidence of hypoxemia, but the association of capnography monitoring with the incidence of other adverse outcomes surrounding these procedures has not been well studied. Our aims were to estimate the incidence of pharmacological rescue events and death at discharge f...

Modeling the costs and benefits of capnography monitoring during procedural sedation for gastrointestinal endoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The addition of capnography to procedural sedation/analgesia (PSA) guidelines has been controversial due to limited evidence of clinical utility in moderate PSA and cost concerns. PATIENTS AND METHODS A comprehensive model of PSA during gastrointestinal endoscopy was developed to capture adverse events (AEs), guideline interventions, outcomes, and costs. Randomized, ...

Respiratory therapies in the critical care setting. Should every mechanically ventilated patient be monitored with capnography from intubation to extubation?

One of the most important aspects of caring for a critically ill patient is monitoring. Few would disagree that the most essential aspect of monitoring is frequent physical assessments. Complementing the physical examination is continuous monitoring of heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen saturation measured via pulse-oximetry, which have become the standard of care in intensive care ...

Capnography outside the operating rooms.

192 January 2013 H ISTORICALLY, anesthesiologists seem to be the forerunners in implementing tools and standards for safety in the medical fraternity. In the United States, since 1985, there has been a dramatic decrease in the malpractice insurance premiums of anesthesiologists. Such a decrease has not been seen in other medical or surgical specialties over this time frame. Thanks to the foresi...
