Clear Juice Turbidity Monitoring for Sugar Quality
نویسنده
چکیده
A considerable amount of South African raw sugar is sold to export markets. Consistently good filterability of this sugar is important for satisfying the requirements of customers. To the refiner, the filterability of raw melt is important as this affects refinery throughput. Analysis of filtrationimpeding impurities in raw sugar has shown that, among other things, poor juice clarification could be related to poor filtering sugars. To this end, a South African Sugar Association sponsored investigation into sources of high turbidity in clarified juices and their relation to poor filtering sugars was begun. Results from the 2002 season show that both process variables and cane quality were causes of high juice turbidities. In particular, flow disturbances, poor pH control, and poor and frequent start-up and shutdown incidents were major process variable contributors to poor turbidities. Some of the worst start-up and shutdown incidents would have resulted in carryover. Poor cane quality consistently resulted in high juice turbidity. While cane quality is largely a field issue, evidence suggests that slowing down of the factory does improve juice turbidity. This strategy would be particularly beneficial when employed to minimise the frequency of the shutdown and start-up often associated with poor cane supply. It is planned to correlate juice turbidity to sugar filterability and to relate these to various aspects of cane quality. Filterability of raw sugar is generally only measured at the Sugar Terminal and then only on composited samples. More frequent measurements are needed for process monitoring and, to this end, filterability test equipment is being manufactured for use at mills.

Mixed Juice Clarification Revisited
The clarification of mixed juice has been the subject of research for decades, due mostly to its large impact on sugar quality. Much, if not all, of the work has however been done on mixed juice originating from milling rather than from diffusion. This paper examines a back-to-basics, laboratory approach, involving cane juices produced from conditions simulating milling and diffusion. Furthermo...
متن کاملEffect of Addition of Separan at Different Concentrations as a Flocculants on Quality of Sugar Cane Juice
The study was designed to evaluate the use of low concentrations of separan flocculent (Less than 3 ppm) on physicochemical properties of sugar cane juice. Colour, pH, purity, turbidity, pol, brix, reducing sugars tannins and polyphenols of crushed cane (green and burned) juice, mixed juice and clarified juice were studied. The results showed that pol, brix, reducing sugar and turbidity are hig...
متن کاملDesign and Performance of an in Line Turbidity Meter for Clarification Control
Mud solids entrained in clarified juice have an adverse effect on subsequent sugar curing and may retard refinery filtration rates if occluded in raw sugar crystals. Entrainment may be caused by refractory juices or instability of process control and may itself lead to unstable processing rates due to retarded curing rates and molasses recirculation. The adverse effects may therefore be quite p...

Date juice was treated by cross- flow ultra-filtration with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 5 kDa. Optimized levels of feed brix, TMP and operation time were determined as 47.13, 82.11 psi and 30 min, respectively. Under such conditions, 80.94% decolourisation and 97.78 % turbidity reduction were obtained while loss of glucose and fructose were estimated to be only 3.49% and 9.62%, respectiv...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Smri Juice Colour Analysis Methods and Laboratory Clarification Tests
Raw sugar colour is an increasing sugar quality concern, not because of a decline in the quality of South African very high pol raws but rather due to rapid improvements in the raw house colours in the rest of the world. Technically, raw sugar with lower colour has direct implications for the refiner’s effort and cost of processing that sugar. Enormous benefits could be derived if colourants co...
