Environmental benefits of electricity grid interconnections in Northeast Asia
نویسنده
چکیده
From an environmental perspective, electricity grid interconnections in Northeast Asia make sense. Cities in Northeast China, Mongolia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), and the Republic of Korea (ROK) suffer from poor air quality due to the extensive use of coal-fired power generation. Rural communities suffer from a deficit of electricity, forcing reliance on coal and biofuels for cooking and heating in the home, which causes health-damaging indoor air pollution. Regional air pollution from acid rain and ozone is widespread. In addition, Japan is finding it hard to meet its commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. Yet, just across their borders in far eastern Russia are extensive, clean energy resources: hydroelectricity and natural gas, and (potentially) nuclear power and tidal power. It would be environmentally beneficial to generate electricity cleanly in far eastern Russia and transmit the electricity across the borders into China, Mongolia, the DPRK, the ROK, and Japan, thereby displacing coal-fired electricity generation. We estimate that currently planned projects could alleviate the problems of two to five Chinese cities, with the potential for much larger benefits in the future. 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Environmental Aspects of Electricity Grid Interconnection in Northeast Asia
Environmental degradation is widespread in Northeast Asia, particularly atmospheric pollution. Enhanced electricity grid interconnections in Northeast Asia offer two distinct kinds of benefits: (a) the spatial separation of generating source and point of electricity use, and (b) the substitution of cleaner fuels for coal. The first of these factors offers real potential. In most of the region, ...

Electricity grid interconnections have played a key role in the history of electric power systems. The greatest benefits of interconnection are usually derived from synchronous AC operation, but this can also entail greater reliability risks. An alternative energy supply to assist the main power stations in future is expected from renewable energy sources based on distributed generation like Sm...

This work was supported by the Academy of Korean Studies of the Republic of Korea in year 2012-2013 (AKS-2010-CAA-2101) Energy security has assumed newfound geopolitical importance at the outset of XXI century (Moran and Russell, 2008). Diminishing fossil fuel supplies have led to fears of energy shortages, while rapid economic and population growth have fuelled the demand for cheap, clean and...
متن کاملEffects of Wind Power plants on Energy Price and Power Systems Reliability in Imperfect Competition Electricity Market
The benefits of wind power generation have led to an ever-increasing expansion of wind farms around the world. The low cost of production and the environmental benefits of wind farms are some of the main reasons for using wind energy. On the other hand, uncertainty costs in the production and control of the output of wind turbines are among the problems that are being encountered for electricit...
