Some Observations on Fairness of Bandwidth Sharing
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper reviews the engineering solutions and economic models for fair allocation of network bandwidth to elastic flows. By using examples, it gives insight to Proportional Fairness, and how it compares to the fairness achieved by TCP. The second topic is a discussion of fair bandwidth allocation between multicast and unicast flows. By separating the discussion into economic and engineering viewpoints, this paper discusses ideal solutions and suggests practical approaches to achieving reasonable fairness. email address: [email protected] © 1999 Sun Microsystems, Inc. Fairly Sharing the Network for Multitier Applications in Clouds
A significant trend caused by cloud computing is to aggregate applications for sharing resources. Thus, it is necessary to provide fair resources and performance among applications, especially for the network, which is provided in the best-effort manner in current clouds. Although many studies have made efforts for provisioning fair bandwidth, they are not sufficient for network fairness. In fa...
متن کاملLocation Aware Opportunistic Bandwidth Sharing between Static and Mobile Users with Stochastic Learning in Cellular Networks
In this paper, we consider the problem of location-dependent opportunistic bandwidth sharing between static and mobile (i.e., moving) downlink users in a cellular network. Each cell of the network has some fixed number of static users. Mobile users enter the cell, move inside the cell for some time and then leave the cell. In order to provide higher data rate to the mobile users, we propose loc...
متن کاملResource-aware and quality-fair video-streaming using multiple adaptive TCP connections
In this paper, we present a resource-aware and quality-fair video content sharing system. When a video sharing server has insufficient uplink bandwidth and needs to serve multiple video content sharing services via streaming or downloading to other client peers using TCP transport, each service shares the limited uplink bandwidth equitably, due to the fair sharing characteristics inherent in TC...
متن کاملStructural Properties of Proportional Fairness: Stability and Insensitivity By
In this article we provide a novel characterization of the proportionally fair bandwidth allocation of network capacities, in terms of the Fenchel– Legendre transform of the network capacity region. We use this characterization to prove stability (i.e., ergodicity) of network dynamics under proportionally fair sharing, by exhibiting a suitable Lyapunov function. Our stability result extends pre...
متن کاملEvaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...
