چکیده

Advance biological wastewater treatment is performed in various ORP conditions including anaerobic, anoxic and oxic processes. For removal of specific industrial and petrochemical contaminants such as: aromatic hydrocarbons (BTX), the anaerobic treatment is recommended as the adequate alternative for their removal. Anaerobic treatment process is well known as an efficient method to degrade high strength wastewater. For investigations of the treatment processes in laboratory conditions, anoxic reactor of the 5 L volume working on the HRT value of 20 h as well as anaerobic reactor of the 2,5 L and the value of HRT 72 h and 144 h were used. The concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons in municipal wastewater amounted to between 1.0 to 12.0 mg/L. A moderate negative influence of these compounds on COD removal in anoxic and anaerobic processes has been shown.

Anaerobic biodegradation of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons are wide-spread in our environment. These compounds exhibit low chemical reactivity and for many decades were thought to undergo biodegradation only in the presence of free oxygen. During the past decade, however, an increasing number of microorganisms have been detected that degrade hydrocarbons under strictly anoxic conditions.

PAHs in wastewater: removal efficiency in a conventional wastewater treatment plant and comparison with model predictions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are very hazardous compounds and, owing to their lipophilicity, they can easily cross biological membranes and accumulate inside organisms, causing damage to the genetic material. The scientific interest in PAHs is related to their demonstrated or supposed genotoxicity (cancer-causing characteristics of B[alpha]Py and dB[alpha, h] first suspected in the 1...

Metabolic Biomarkers for Monitoring in Situ Anaerobic Hydrocarbon Degradation

During the past 15 years researchers have made great strides in understanding the metabolism of hydrocarbons by anaerobic bacteria. Organisms capable of utilizing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, alkanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been isolated and described. In addition, the mechanisms of degradation for these compounds have been elucidated. This basic research has led ...

Composition and aggregation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in hyperhaline and municipal wastewater treatment plants

As important constituents of activated sludge flocs, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play significant roles in pollutants adsorption, the formation and maintenance of microbial aggregates, and the protection of microbes from external environmental stresses. In this work, EPS in activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (M-WWTP) with anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A(2)/O) pro...

The Analysis of a Microbial Community in the UV/O3-Anaerobic/Aerobic Integrated Process for Petrochemical Nanofiltration Concentrate (NFC) Treatment by 454-Pyrosequencing

In this study, high-throughput pyrosequencing was applied on the analysis of the microbial community of activated sludge and biofilm in a lab-scale UV/O3- anaerobic/aerobic (A/O) integrated process for the treatment of petrochemical nanofiltration concentrate (NFC) wastewater. NFC is a type of saline wastewater with low biodegradability. From the anaerobic activated sludge (Sample A) and aerobi...
