Protozoan Taxonomy and Systematics
نویسنده
چکیده
The classification of protozoa and other microorganisms above the organizational level of the bacteria has always been dependent on microscopy because the body sizes involved generally range from only one micrometre to one or two millimetres in length. Any structures these species possess, useful in comparative studies of their morphology and thus their taxonomyand systematics, are at the cellular and subcellular levels, and invisible to the naked eye. The physiological properties of protozoa (and the neighbouring algae) have also played a role in the classification of these ubiquitous eukaryotic microorganisms; and of growing significance are the findings made possible by research using molecular biological approaches. Becausewe are continuing to learnmore andmore about such minute organisms, protozoan systematics – that is, the taxonomy (classification) and the evolutionary interrelationships of major groups of protozoa – remains a topic of debate and change, still today. Some of the rather large and unwieldy taxonomic groupings of past years are particularly subject to revision with expansion of and refinement in our knowledge about themembers of those – and related – assemblages. Paradoxically, the protozoa themselves are becoming more difficult to define with precision as our information about them and other microbial assemblages increases. Thus, presenting a single satisfactory circumscribed definition for them is not an easy task. It is attempted towards the end of this article; but, for sake of clarity, further background information is first supplied.

Classical Taxonomy of Mosquitoes - a Memorial To
The major contributions of John N. Belkin to the field of mosquito systematics are noted. Hallmarks of his publications are presented and his hypotheses about the evolution, speciation, competition, distribution and classification of mosquitoes are summarized. The current status of the field of mosquito systematics is examined. It is argued that mosquito systematics is still largely at the alph...
متن کاملBiological Systematics
Biological systematics encompasses three distinct activities: taxonomy, classification (which may or may not be a reasonable reflection of phylogeny) and nomenclature (Fig. 1). Although systematists rigorously and distinctly practice these three components, they are often amalgamated under the term “taxonomy.” While the breadth of “taxonomy” is clearly understood among most practitioners, it ca...
متن کاملTaxonomy of asexual microfungus Periconia on Phoenix in India
The anamorphic fungus genus Periconia is worldwide in distribution and causes foliar disease on plants mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. This study presents the description and illustration of P. palmivora discovered on leaves of Phoenix dactylifera (Palmae/Arecaceae) from Terai forest region of Uttar Pradesh, India. The taxonomic determination was based on morphological characteristi...
متن کاملTaxonomy and systematics are key to biological information: Arabidopsis, Eutrema (Thellungiella), Noccaea and Schrenkiella (Brassicaceae) as examples
Taxonomy and systematics provide the names and evolutionary framework for any biological study. Without these names there is no access to a biological context of the evolutionary processes which gave rise to a given taxon: close relatives and sister species (hybridization), more distantly related taxa (ancestral states), for example. This is not only true for the single species a research proje...
متن کاملOn certain Neocomian – Aptian calcareous algae in the West of Kopet Dagh (NE-Iran) – Systematics and compared biogeography, focusing on Dasycladales
In Western Kopet Dagh, the lower Cretaceous carbonate series contains distinctive assemblages of calcareous algae, chiefly Dasycladales which are primarily studied in this work. Based on the significant presence of certain species, the Zard Formation, assigned to the Valanginian and, in its upper part, to the Hauterivian or base of the Barremian, is subdivided into two intervals, respectively A...
