Pulmonary embolism and acute pancreatitis: case series and review.

چکیده
Reports of pulmonary embolism in the setting of acute pancreatitis are rare. We present three cases of acute pancreatitis associated with pulmonary embolism and review the literature. Two of the three patients had severe acute pancreatitis with bilateral pulmonary emboli, and to our knowledge, these cases represent the first report of pulmonary embolism occurring in the setting of pancreatic ascites and pleural effusion. All patients experienced abdominal pain, though in one patient, symptoms suggestive of a pulmonary embolism were lacking. All three patients were successfully treated with unfractionated heparin and conservative management. Pulmonary thrombosis may occur in the setting of severe acute pancreatitis as the result of systemic inflammatory response. We review the literature and provide microvascular explanations for the occurrence of pulmonary complications and thrombosis in the setting of acute pancreatitis. We also review prior cases of pulmonary embolism in acute pancreatitis. Our experience suggests that pulmonary embolism may be an under-recognized complication of severe acute pancreatitis.

Inferior vena cava [IVC] thrombosis is a rare complication of acute pancreatitis. Here we report a case of IVC thrombosis with associated portal vein thrombosis complicating recurrent acute pancreatitis related to alcohol in a 31 year old male patient. We discuss the pathogenesis, clinical features and management of IVC thrombosis complicating acute and chronic pancreatitis in brief. The case i...

A rare case of inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis and pulmonary embolism secondary to acute exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis was reported. Radionuclide venography and lung perfusion scintigraphy were performed on a 46-year-old male with acute exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis who complained of mild swelling of a leg and shortness of breath. Scintigraphy showed an abnormal large hot spot...

Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a fatal condition that may rarely occur due to complications of coronary catheter insertion. In this case report, a 41-year-old male was presented 48 hours after radiofrequency catheter ablation(RFCA) for the management of Wolf-Parkinson-White syndromewith acute onset of dyspnea, hemoptysis, and chest pain. The physical examination revealed coarse crackles in ...

BACKGROUND Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory process of the pancreas that can trigger a systemic inflammatory response. Pulmonary embolism refers to obstruction of the pulmonary artery or one of its branches by material (usually a thrombus) that originated elsewhere in the body. Extensive lower limb deep vein thrombosis with pulmonary embolism is a rare complication of acute pancreati...
