چکیده

Major recent ad ances: Amphiphilic peptides, in other words, peptides that contain hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions along their lengths, have been molecularly designed and exploited in various ways. Most notable advancements in the past few years are their proposed use for scaffolds for nanometer structures such as molecular wires and mineralization of hydroxyapatite crystals in a particular orientation. Our group has also designed a new class of short and simple surfactant-like peptides that self-assemble into well-defined nanotubes and nanovesicles. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

De novo design of biomimetic antimicrobial polymers.

The design of polymers and oligomers that mimic the complex structures and remarkable biological properties of proteins is an important endeavor with both fundamental and practical implications. Recently, a number of nonnatural peptides with designed sequences have been elaborated to provide biologically active structures; in particular, facially amphiphilic peptides built from beta-amino acids...

Secondary structures of proteins and peptides in amphiphilic environments. (A review).

Many peptides and proteins that act at lipid--water interfaces assume a unique amphiphilic secondary structure which is induced by the anisotropy of the interface. By using synthetic peptides in which these inducible amphiphilic structures have been optimized, one can show that the amphiphilic alpha helix is a functional determinant of representative apolipoproteins, peptide toxins, and peptide...

Peptides at the Interface: Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Designer Peptides and Their Membrane Interaction Propensity

Self-assembling amphiphilic designer peptides have been successfully applied as nanomaterials in biomedical applications. Understanding molecular interactions at the peptide-membrane interface is crucial, since interactions at this site often determine (in)compatibility. The present study aims to elucidate how model membrane systems of different complexity (in particular single-component phosph...

Self-assembling amphiphilic peptides†

The self-assembly of several classes of amphiphilic peptides is reviewed, and selected applications are discussed. We discuss recent work on the self-assembly of lipopeptides, surfactant-like peptides and amyloid peptides derived from the amyloid-β peptide. The influence of environmental variables such as pH and temperature on aggregate nanostructure is discussed. Enzyme-induced remodelling due...

Amphiphilic secondary structure: design of peptide hormones.

Peptide synthesis can be used for elucidating the roles of secondary structures in the specificity of hormones, antigens, and toxins. Intermediate sized peptides with these activities assume amphiphilic secondary structures in the presence of membranes. When models are designed to optimize the amphiphilicity of the secondary structure, stronger interactions can be observed with the synthetic pe...
