Using Timing Data to Measure Signal Attenuation in the G Scintillators
نویسنده
چکیده
In this research project cosmic ray data will be used to measure signal attenuation and check the geometrical efficiency of the trigger along the G scintillators. For an equal amount of energy lost in the scintillator, the amplitude of the detected signal varies as the hit location along the scintillator varies. Particles that strike the scintillators cause the material to emit photons. The intensity of photons decreases due to different processes as they travel through the scintillators and the light guides (surface reflection). This attenuation is characterized by the attenuation constant μ in the equation A = A0e −μx, where x is the location of the hit. Timing information is used to measure the hit location. This report describes the setup used for the measurement as well as the analysis of the data. The values of the attenuation constants for the 16 scintillator pairs of Octant 5 are given.

Recently, FPGA based digitizers have found attractive applications in signal processing for complex detector arrays in nuclear physics [1]. In the fast digitizers, a flash ADC directly samples and stores the PMT output of scintillation detectors. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques are used to extract the energy and timing information of the acquired signal. DSP not only reduces requirem...
متن کاملApplication of Single-Frequency Time-Space Filtering Technique for Seismic Ground Roll and Random Noise Attenuation
Time-frequency filtering is an acceptable technique for attenuating noise in 2-D (time-space) and 3-D (time-space-space) reflection seismic data. The common approach for this purpose is transforming each seismic signal from 1-D time domain to a 2-D time-frequency domain and then denoising the signal by a designed filter and finally transforming back the filtered signal to original time domain. ...

متن کاملInvestigation of Lanthanum Scintillators for 3-D PET
The main thrust for this work is the investigation and design of a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner based on new Lanthanum Halide scintillators. In three–dimensional (3-D) PET the major limitations are scanner dead-time and ability to reject randoms and scatter. Therefore, to reach the full potential of 3-D PET requires a scintillator with good timing resolution and good energy resolu...
