Developmental Changes in Infants’ Ability to Cope with Dialect Variation inWord Recognition

چکیده
Toward the end of their first year of life, infants’ overly specified word representations are thought to give way to more abstract ones, which helps them to better cope with variation not relevant to word identity (e.g., voice and affect). This developmental change may help infants process the ambient language more efficiently, thus enabling rapid gains in vocabulary growth. One particular kind of variability that infants must accommodate is that of dialectal accent, because most children will encounter speakers from different regions and backgrounds. In this study, we explored developmental changes in infants’

Promoting Developmental Outcomes of Premature Infants by the Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment (COPE)
Objective: Premature neonates are at greater risk for developmental problems such as cerebral palsy, delays in development, hearing problems, and problems seeing. The challenge encountering healthcare professionals who support preterm neonates and their parents is not only a matter of ensuring neonates survival, but to optimize infant development. Interventions to reduce adverse health outcomes...
متن کاملDialect recognition in a noisy environment: preliminary data
The ability to identify the dialect spoken by an individual by voice alone has been widely investigated for many languages. The studies suggest a large degree of individual variation in dialect recognition ability and that factors such as perceptual distance and competence in the language interact with this variation. Trained listeners have also been shown to be unstable in their judgements of ...
متن کاملInfant Dialect Discrimination
In order to understand speech, infants must differentiate between phonetic changes that are linguistically contrastive and those that are not. Research has shown that infants are very sensitive to fine-grained differences in speech sounds that differentiate words in their own or another language. However, little is known about infants’ ability to discriminate phonetic differences associated wit...
متن کاملHead circumference in Iranian infants
Introduction: Head circumference (HC) measurement is one of the important parameter for diagnosis of neurological, developmental disorders and dysmorphic syndromes. Recognition of different disorders requires an understanding of normal variation for HC size, in particular, in infancy period with most rapid growth of the brain. Because of international and interracial standard chart differences ...
متن کاملThe Status of [h] and [ʔ] in the Sistani Dialect of Miyankangi
The purpose of this article is to determine the phonemic status of [h] and [ʔ] in the Sistani dialect of Miyankangi. Auditory tests applied to the relevant data show that [ʔ] occurs mainly in word-initial position, where it stands in free variation with Ø. The only place where [h] is heard is in Arabic and Persian loanwords, and only in the pronunciation of some speakers who are educated and/or...
