Towards the inclusion of external factors in quantitative risk assessment: the analysis of NaTech accident scenarios
نویسنده
چکیده
Threats deriving from external hazard factors as natural events and intentional acts of interference are perceived as important issues affecting the safety of chemical and process plants where relevant quantities of hazardous substances are present. The increasing frequency of some natural events having a particularly high severity also raised a growing concern for industrial asset integrity and for the consequences of accident scenarios that may be triggered by intense natural events. The specific features of technological accidents triggered by natural events were recently recognized, and these scenarios are now indicated as NaTech accidents. The screening of past accident databases points out that NaTech accidents are quite common in industrial facilities. However, these scenarios are seldom considered in the safety assessment of industrial facilities and a specific evaluation of the potential consequences of NaTech accidents is generally not carried out. In the present contribution, the framework for the analysis of NaTech scenarios is defined and the recent advances in the tools available for the assessment of NaTech events are revised.

Introduction: Oxygen central is one of the vital parts of the hospital that is responsible for supplying oxygen. The occurrence of any defect can result in fatality and finansial damage. Therefore, effective risk analysis is very importance in preventing and mitigating such potential accidents. The purpose of this study was to analyze the scenarios of accidents in the oxygen central unit of the ...
متن کاملThe Role of Quantitative Risk Assessment in Improving Hazardous Installations Siting: A Case Study
Safety distance has already been a main measurement for the hazard control of chemical installations interpreted to mean providing space between the hazardous installation and different types of targets. But, the problem is how to determine the enough space. This study considers the application of quantitative risk assessment to evaluating a compressed natural gas station site and to identi...
متن کاملQuantitative Risk Assessment of Condensate Storage Tank, Considering Domino Effects
Introduction: In process industries, some of the primary events may result in secondary events in an industrial unit called the domino effect. Since refinery storage tanks are always at risk of fire and explosion, quantitative risk assessment is important in determining the severity and outcome of an accident, taking into account the effects of dominoes on the main industry, neighbors, and soci...
متن کاملReduction of NaTech Risk Due to Lightning by the Use of Protection Systems
Several accidents that occurred in the last decades evidenced that the impact of natural events in industrial plants may trigger accidental scenarios involving the release of relevant quantities of hazardous substances. Severe scenarios typical of the process industry, as fires, explosions, toxic releases, and water pollution were reported as the consequence of natural events in industrial area...

Power networks are among the most important infrastructures that without them, industrial, economic and social procedures will halt. Therefore, they should be planned for the most difficult conditions to provide services with minimum disruption. Power substations are of great importance to a power network, because any disruption in their components can produce extensive problems through the net...
