چکیده

Modern File Systems provide scalable performance for large file data management. However, in case of metadata management the usual approach is to have single or few points of metadata service (MDS). In the current world, file systems are challenged by unique needs such as managing exponentially growing files, using filesystem as a key-value store, checkpointing that are highly metadata intensive and are usually bottlenecked by the centralized MDS schemes. To overcome this metadata bottle-neck, we evaluate a scalable MDS layer for the existing cluster file systems using Giga+ -a high performance distributed index without synchronization and serialization and TableFS -a file system with an embedded No-SQL database using modern key-value pair levelDB. We take layered approach to scale the metadata performance which does not need any hardware infrastructure upgrade in the existing storage clusters. In addition to providing scalable and increased metadata performance by several folds, avoiding metadata hotspots, packing small files, our MDS layer adds no-or-low performance overhead on the data throughput and resource utilizations of the underlying cluster. Foundations of linear control via a new geometric paradigm

In this report, we reexamine the foundations of classical control theory with reference to eigenvalue geometry via a new set of graphical controls tools, gain plots. These plots depict eigenvalue trajectory as an explicit function of gain. Various classical control concepts are generalized in nine theorems and demonstrated in three simple, yet pedagogical, examples. University Libraries Carnegi...

Task Oriented Vision

This paper overviews two recently completed vision systems (a rock sampling system for planetary rovers and a bin-picking system for industrial robots). Then, we will examine the reason why these two systems have different architectures although their goals are roughly same, picking up something by visual observation. Based on this discussion, we will develop the task-oriented vision paradigm, ...

Software Acquisition Patterns of Failure and How to Recognize Them

In systems today, software provides substantial portions of capability and performance. In many Department of Defense (DoD) acquisitions, however, software too often is a minor consideration when the early and most constraining decisions about program cost, schedule, and behavior are made (i.e., prior to Milestone A). These decisions manifest themselves in the acquisition strategy, the system a...
