Light-Independent Uncoupler-Sensitive Ion Uptake by Green and by Pale Cells of Variegated Leaves of Higher Plants in Relation to Protein Content and Chloroplast Integrity
نویسنده
چکیده
C1G and K® uptake by cells of variegated leaves of Oenothera and Tradescantia having normal and mutated chloroplasts, respectively, have been investigated. Under our conditions light has no effect on ion uptake. C l e uptake is highly sensitive to FCCP in both green and mutated cells, while K® uptake is inhibited only in the green cells. Rates of ion uptake are higher in the green than in the mutated cells. The results allow two alternative explanations: (I) mutation may affect carrier-proteins and hence alter ion accumulation capacity of the cells; (II) light-independent metabolically controlled ion accumulation may be correlated with chloroplast differentiation.

Identification and Characterization of LHCB1 Co-Suppressed Line in Arabidopsis
To explore the function of light-harvesting complex protein (LHCP) in Arabidopsis growth and development, the Leclere and Bartel seed collection was screened. In this collection randomly cloned cDNAs are expressed under the CaMV35S promoter. A pale green line has been identified and characterized in more details. Analysis of the inserted cDNA in the pale green line showed it encodes LHCB1 prote...
متن کاملUptake and nitrate accumulation affected by partial replacement of nitrate-N with different source of amino acids in spinach and lettuce
As natural plant growth stimulators, amino acids are widely used to improve the yield and quality of crops. Change in enzymes activities of N assimilation (NR, NiR and GS), residual nitrate (NO3-), soluble protein content, and yield of spinach and lettuce plants were investigated under replacing 20% nitrate-N in the nutrient solution by L-glycine and blood meal amino acids. Seeds of the mention...
متن کاملLight Metabolism and Chloroplast Structure in Chlorophyll-Deficient Tobacco Mutants
In tobacco mutants which contain 1/8 to 1/30 of the normal chlorophyll content per leaf area the content of yellow pigments (carotenoids) is also diminished but less in proportion to the chlorophyll content. The pale yellow-green mutant grows and matures provided that light intensity and temperature make up for the chlorophyll deficiency. In most green plants and algae light saturation of photo...
متن کاملDeletion of the chloroplast-localized Thylakoid formation1 gene product in Arabidopsis leads to deficient thylakoid formation and variegated leaves.
Development of thylakoid membranes depends upon the transport of membrane vesicles from the chloroplast inner envelope and subsequent fusion of vesicles within the interior of the plastid. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) Thylakoid formation1 (Thf1) gene product is shown here to control an important step required for the normal organization of these vesicles into mature thylakoid stacks a...
متن کاملIdentification of a Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase homologue, EaZIP, differentially expressed in variegated Epipremnum aureum 'Golden Pothos' is achieved through a unique method of comparative study using tissue regenerated plants.
Variegated plants provide a valuable tool for studying chloroplast biogenesis by allowing direct comparison between green and white/yellow sectors within the same leaf. While variegated plants are abundant in nature, the mechanism of leaf variegation remains largely unknown. Current studies are limited to a few mutants in model plant species, and are complicated by the potential for cross-conta...
