چکیده

As part of a long term project to develop speech recognitions systems for young computer users, specifically children aged between 6 and 11 years, this paper presents a preliminary investigation into the classification of children’s vowels. In earlier studies of adult speech we found that dynamic or timevarying cues were useful in classifying diphthongal vowels but provided no advantage for monophthongs if duration is included as an additional cue. In this study we investigate whether dynamic cues (modelled by Discrete Cosine Transform coefficients) are present to a greater or lesser extent in children’s vowels. Our hypothesis is that some of the observed variability in children’s vowels may be due to systematic time-varying features. We found that the children’s monophthong data was better separated by a combination of DCT coefficients and vowel duration than by the formant data sampled at the vowel midpoint plus duration. This result contrasts with our finding on Australian adult data in which we found it was necessary to model the formant trajectory only to separate the diphthongs.

Acoustic Characteristics of Japanese Vowels

The purpose of this study was to build a large database on Japanese vowels and to clarify their acoustic characteristics. Recordings were made of 256 males and 252 females aged from 6 to 76 years old, for both Kanto (Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka) dialects, producing the vowels /i, e, a, o, u/ in isolation, in /h-Vda/ syllables and in /b-V-ta/ syllables within and without a carrier sentence. The fiv...

Regional dialect variation in the vowel systems of typically developing children.

PURPOSE To investigate regional dialect variation in the vowel systems of typically developing 8- to 12-year-old children. METHOD Thirteen vowels in isolated h_d words were produced by 94 children and 93 adults (males and females). All participants spoke American English and were born and raised in 1 of 3 distinct dialect regions in the United States: western North Carolina (Southern dialect)...

What is in the Dynamic Features: Analysis of the Derivatives of Log-Mel-Spectra

The present investigation analyses the behaviour of the first order derivatives of the log-mel-spectrum of vowels which constitutes the basis for the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC). The results indicate that the dynamic features when inspected at log-mel-spectra level seem to be less influenced by speaker specific characteristics and degrade less in fast speech. However, when analys...

بررسی اثر فیدبک شنوائی در تولید گفتار بعد از عمل کوکلئار ایمپلنت

The main goal of this study is to determine the auditory feedback effects in improvement of speech production process in prelingual totally deaf children who used cochlear implant prosthesis. For this reason, we recorded speech of four prelingual cochlear implant children pre and post of operation. Then we extract some static features of vowels-such as fundamental frequency, formant frequencies...

Acoustic characteristics of clearly spoken English tense and lax vowels

Clearly produced vowels exhibit longer duration and more extreme spectral properties than plain, conversational vowels. These features also characterize tense relative to lax vowels. This study explored the interaction of clear-speech and tensity effects by comparing clear and plain productions of three English tense-lax vowel pairs (/i-ɪ/, /ɑ-ʌ/, /u-ʊ/ in /kVd/ words). Both temporal and spectr...
