Diethylstilbestrol: A Suppressor of Induced Furunculosis in Rabbits
نویسندگان
چکیده
Available data indicate that the administration of partially purified female sex hormones increased the resistance of mice to induced pneumococcic infection,' or anthrax infection.! Investigations related to the effect of diethylstilbestrol on induced furunculosis in rabbits are lacking. Dressel and Kellere demonstrated that natural and acquired antibody formation may be increased during pregnancy and they pointed out that the peak production of bactericidal substances against anthrax bacilli occurred when estrogenic hormones were most concentrated, that is, in the last few weeks of pregnancy. Since it is known that the susceptibility of the host to microbial infection may be influenced by the secretions of the endocrine system it was felt that injections of diethylstilbestrol into a suitable experimental animal with a subsequent study of the establishment and evolution of staphylococcal infection would give useful information on the role of a given estrogen in infection and resistance to staphylococci.

Interaction of staphylococcal alpha toxin and the estrogenic hormone diethylstilbestrol.
Previous work in this laboratory showed that diethylstilbestrol was capable of suppressing induced furunculosis in rabbits. The present study indicates that the synthetic estrogenic hormone diethylstilbestrol which is used for acne, estrogen deficiency, cancer, and other disorders, can reduce the cytolytic action of staphylococcal alpha toxin. The cytotoxic action of purified alpha toxin for ti...
متن کاملCentral Effect of Exogenous Histamine on Pain Induced by Sub-Plantar Injection of Formalin in Rabbits
In the present study, the effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of normal saline (control), histamine, mepyramine (a histamine H1-receptor antagonist) and ranitidine (a histamine H2-receptor antagonist) were investigated on the formalin-induced pain in rabbits. Subcutaneous (SC) injection of a formalin (100 μl, 5%) solution into the ventral surface of the right hind paw was pe...
متن کاملInterrelationship of βeta-2 microglobulin, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine in streptozotocin -induced diabetes mellitus in rabbits
Measurement of serum creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) are used as indicators of glomerular filtration rate. The increased levels of these biomarkers are usually detectable at advanced stages of kidney complications. The aim of this study was to find the interrelationship of beta-2 microglobulin (β2M), BUN and Cr in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus in rabbits. Diabetes...
متن کاملNon-Diethylstilbestrol-Associated Primary Clear Cell Carcinoma of the Vagina: Two Case Reports with Immunohistochemical Studies and Literature Review
Primary clear cell adenocarcinomas most commonly involve the genitourinary system, including the vagina. Previously, primary clear cell adenocarcinomas of the vagina have been discussed within the context of prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol. Due to its widely proven role in the development of this carcinoma, administration of diethylstilbestrol is prohibited. We present two cases of non-...
