Solitary Bees as Alternative Pollinators of Pennsylvania Fruit Crops

چکیده

Introduction Pollination is a pivotal, keystone process in almost all terrestrial ecosystem food webs: it supports global and sustainable productivity in agriculture and forestry, and maintains the biodiversity of plant and animal life. Bees are the most important pollinators, but bee declines in abundance and species richness have been documented on 4 continents. Almost 100 crop species in the US rely to some extent on honey bee pollination and the value of honey bees to U.S. agriculture is estimated to be $15 billion annually. Collectively these 100 crops make up about 1/3 of the US diet and consist mainly of high-value specialty crops (i.e. fruit, vegetable and nut crops) that provide the bulk of vitamins and other nutrients that contribute to healthy diets.

Pollination Services Provided by Bees in Pumpkin Fields Supplemented with Either Apis mellifera or Bombus impatiens or Not Supplemented

Pollinators provide an important service in many crops. Managed honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are used to supplement pollination services provided by wild bees with the assumption that they will enhance pollination, fruit set and crop yield beyond the levels provided by the wild bees. Recent declines in managed honey bee populations have stimulated interest in finding alternative managed polli...

Ascosphaera apis, the entomopathogenic fungus affecting larvae of native bees (Xylocopa augusti): First report in South America.

BACKGROUND Nowadays several invertebrate pollinators of crops and wild plants are in decline as result of multiple and, sometimes, unknown factors; among them, the modern agricultural practices, pests and diseases are postulated as the most important factors. Bees of the genus Xylocopa are considered effective pollinators of passion fruit crops in tropical regions, as well as important pollinat...

The birds and the bees:

Hedgerow fruits provide a food resource for several UK farmland bird species from late summer, through winter and into spring. This project aims to develop the understanding of the interactions between fruit-bearing hedgerow flowers, their pollinators, hedgerow fruits and frugivorous birds. Experiments revealed that flowers of blackthorn, hawthorn and ivy all benefited from insect visits in ord...

Wild pollinators enhance fruit set of crops regardless of honey bee abundance.

The diversity and abundance of wild insect pollinators have declined in many agricultural landscapes. Whether such declines reduce crop yields, or are mitigated by managed pollinators such as honey bees, is unclear. We found universally positive associations of fruit set with flower visitation by wild insects in 41 crop systems worldwide. In contrast, fruit set increased significantly with flow...

Here, we show that two existing valuation methods, previously thought to be unrelated , are each a...
