چکیده

This study presents a novel computational approach to the analysis of unaccusative/unergative distinction in Turkish by employing feed-forward artificial neural networks with a backpropagation algorithm. The findings of the study reveal correspondences between semantic notions and syntactic manifestations of unaccusative/unergative distinction in this language, thus presenting a computational analysis of the distinction at the syntax/semantics interface. The approach is applicable to other languages, particularly the ones which lack an explicit diagnostic such as auxiliary selection but has a number of diagnostics in-

The Distinction Between Unaccusative and Unergative Verbs in Turkish: An Offline and an Eye Tracking Study of Split Intransitivity

The Unaccusativity Hypothesis (UH) holds that intransitive verbs are divided into two broad classes, namely unaccusatives and unergatives. While there is evidence that the UH holds cross-linguistically, it is known that languages do not divide the intransitives into two uniform groups. We investigate the unaccusative-unergative distinction in Turkish by an offline grammaticality judgment task u...

Mono-eventive Verbs of Emission and their bi-eventive nominalizations∗

In languages like German or Dutch, the distinction between unergative and unaccusative verbs is borne out by a number of syntactic tests. Unergative verbs appear in impersonal passives while unaccusative verbs do not (cf. Perlmutter (1978)). Unergative verbs select the perfect auxiliary haben/hebben (to have) while unaccusative verbs select sein/zijn (to be) (cf. Hoekstra (1984)). Unaccusative ...

The Neural Correlates of Linguistic Distinctions: Unaccusative and Unergative Verbs

Unaccusative verbs like fall are special in that their sole argument is syntactically generated at the object position of the verb rather than at the subject position. Unaccusative verbs are derived by a lexical operation that reduces the agent from transitive verbs. Their insertion into a sentence often involves a syntactic movement from the object to the subject position. To explore the neuro...

Acquisition of English Unergative and Unaccusative Structures by Persian EFL Learners

The acquisition of argument structures has been studied by a variety of second language acquisition scholars within the past two decades (Atay, 2010; Can, 2009; Chay, 2006, & Kras, 2007, among others). In the present study, ‘Predicate’ as the most substantial element of a sentence is investigated. There are three English verb-types which seem to be more problematic for Persian EFL learners: (a)...
