Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and changing epidemiology of childhood bacterial meningitis.

چکیده

Desde a introdução da vacina conjugada contra a Haemophilus influenza tipo B (Hib) (VCHib) em programas de vacinação infantil, houve uma eliminação quase total da meningite por Hib em países de alta e baixa renda. Isso resultou da imunização de crianças e conferiu proteção direta contra a doença invasiva por Hib não apenas entre as crianças vacinadas, mas também proteção indireta a indivíduos não vacinados por meio da interrupção de transmissão da bactéria em comunidades pela vacinação direcionada a crianças. Após a imunização infantil com a VCHib, a Streptococcus pneumoniae emergiu como a principal causa de meningite bacteriana na maioria dos países, embora seguida da Neisseria meningitidis (32%) em alguns países, como o Brasil. O estudo feito por Hirose et al. nesta edição do Jornal sugere que há uma probabilidade de ainda mais mudanças no perfil epidemiológico da meningite infantil no Brasil desde a introdução da vacina pneumocócica conjugada 10-valente-polissacarídeo-Proteína-D (PCV10) no programa de vacinação pública em março de 2010.
