Vowel Identification Using Piecewise Separation Technique

چکیده
A simple method for computer recognition of Telugu speech sounds irrespective of speakers is described. A vocabu bulary consisting of 871 Telugu words containing the ten vowels (f'O/./a :/,/i/,/i :/,/u/,/u :/,/e/,/e :/./0/ and /0 :/) in constant vowel nucleus-consonant (CNC) combination and uttered by three informants was selected as the testing material. Formant frequencies. Flo F2 and F3 of the vowel sounds were extracted by spectrographic analysis. "Piecewise separation" using (F2-F1) or (F3/F2) as parimary recognition parameters and (F3/F,) as a final recognition criterion were used for classification. From frequency distributions of these parameters for both shorter and longer vowel categories suitable boundaries have been selected. III the classification model. shorter and longer subgroup of a vowel have been pooled together in the same class and the overall recognition score is about 84 %.

Vowel separation using the reassigned amplitude-modulation spectrum
This paper presents a method for segregating and recognizing concurrent vowels based on the amplitude modulation spectrum. Vowel segregation is accomplished by F0guided grouping of harmonic components encoded in the amplitude modulation spectrum while vowel recognition is achieved by classifying the segregated vowel spectrum. Main features of the method are (1) the reassigned technique is emplo...
متن کاملThe Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...
متن کاملApplications and Limitations of Independent Component Analysis for Facial and Hand Gesture Surface Electromyograms
In the recent past, there has been an increasing trend to use blind source separation (BSS) or independent component analysis (ICA) algorithms for biomedical data. This paper reviews the concept of ICA and demonstrates its usefulness and limitations in the context of surface electromyograms (sEMG) related to hand movements and facial muscles. In the first experiment ICA has been used to separat...
متن کاملIdentification of Dual-Rate Sampled Hammerstein Systems with a Piecewise-Linear Nonlinearity Using the Key Variable Separation Technique
The identification difficulties for a dual-rate Hammerstein system lie in two aspects. First, the identification model of the system contains the products of the parameters of the nonlinear block and the linear block, and a standard least squares method cannot be directly applied to the model; second, the traditional single-rate discrete-time Hammerstein model cannot be used as the identificati...
متن کاملRanking the Pitches of Concurrent Vowels
In this study we examined the interaction of fundamental frequency (Fo) differences and binaural separation cues on the identification accuracy and judgments of the relative pitches of concurrent vowel pairs. On each pitch ranking trial listeners were told which vowels were presented and were asked simply to indicate which vowel was on the higher pitch. The first vowel had an FO near 140 Hz and...
