Anisotropic norm-oriented mesh adaptation for a Poisson problem

چکیده
We present a novel formulation for the mesh adaptation of the approximation of a PDE. The discussion is restricted to a Poisson problem. The proposed formulation extends the goal-oriented formulation, since it is equation-based and uses an adjoint. At the same time, it supersedes it as a solution-convergent method. Indeed, goal-oriented methods rely on the reduction of the error in evaluating a chosen scalar output with the consequence that as mesh size is increased (more degrees of freedom) only this output is proven to tend to its continuous analog, while the solution field itself may not converge. A remarkable throughput of goal-oriented metric-based adaptation is the mathematical formulation of the mesh adaptation problem under the form of the optimization, in the well-identified set of metrics, of a well-defined functional. In the new proposed formulation, we amplify this advantage. We search, in the same well-identified set of metrics, the minimum of a norm of the approximation error. The norm is prescribed by the user and the method allows addressing the case of multi-objective adaptation, like, for example in aerodynamics, adapting the mesh for drag, lift, moment in one shot. In this work we consider the basic linear finite-element approximation and restrict our study to L norm in order to enjoy second-order convergence. Numerical examples for the Poisson problem are computed.

Anisotropic Mesh Adaptation, the Method of Moving Asymptotes and the global p-norm Stress Constraint
The p-norm often used in stress constrained topology optimisation supposedly mimics a delta function and it is thus characterised by a small length scale, and the same should apply for the solid-void transition. We propose to resolve these features using anisotropic mesh adaptation. We use the method of moving asymptotes with interpolation of sensitivities, asymptotes and design variables betwe...
متن کاملFully Anisotropic Goal-oriented Mesh Adaptation for the Euler Equations
A main advantage of unstructured meshes, i.e., tetrahedral meshes, is their flexibility for generating elements with large shape and size variations everywhere in the domain. Moreover, an adequate adaptation of the mesh impacts favorably numerical schemes. Consequently, an automatic process to control the mesh generation is of main importance. This document describes a goal-oriented anisotropic...
متن کاملAnisotropic Mesh Adaptation for the Finite Element Solution of Anisotropic Diffusion Problems
Anisotropic diffusion problems arise in many fields of science and engineering and are modeled by partial differential equations (PDEs) or represented in variational formulations. Standard numerical schemes can produce spurious oscillations when they are used to solve those problems. A common approach is to design a proper numerical scheme or a proper mesh such that the numerical solution satis...
متن کاملAnisotropic Goal-Oriented Mesh Adaptation for Time Dependent Problems
We present a new algorithm for combining an anisotropic goal-oriented error estimate with the mesh adaptation fixed point method for unsteady problems. The minimization of the error on a functional provides both the density and the anisotropy (stretching) of the optimal mesh. They are expressed in terms of state and adjoint. This method is used for specifying the mesh for a time sub-interval. A...

We present a new algorithm for combining a fully anisotropic goal-oriented mesh adaptation with the transient fixed point method for unsteady problems. The minimization of the error on a functional provides both the density and the anisotropy (stretching) of the optimal mesh. This method is used for specifying the mesh for a time subinterval from the state and the adjoint. The global transient ...
