چکیده

In recent years, the problem of acquiring omnidirectional stereoscopic imagery of dynamic scenes has gained commercial interest, and consequently, new techniques have been proposed to address this problem. The goal of many of these new panoramic methods is to provide practical solutions for acquiring real-time omnidirectional stereoscopic imagery for human viewing. However, there are problems related to mosaicking partially overlapped stereoscopic snapshots of the scene that need to be addressed. Among these issues are the conditions to provide a consistent depth illusion over the whole scene and the appearance of undesired vertical disparities. We develop an acquisition model capable of describing a variety of omnistereoscopic imaging systems and suitable to study the design constraints of these systems. Based on this acquisition model, we compare different acquisition approaches based on mosaicking partial stereoscopic views of the scene in terms of their depth continuity constraints and the appearance of vertical disparities. This work complements and extends our previous work in omnistereoscopic imaging systems by proposing a mathematical framework to contrast different acquisition strategies to create stereoscopic panoramas using a small number of stereoscopic images.©2014 SPIE and IS&T [DOI: 10.1117/1.JEI.23.1.011004]

Stereoscopic depth perception from oblique phase disparities q

In order to understand the role of oblique retinal image disparities in the perception of stereoscopic depth, we measured the depth perceived from random dot stereograms in which phase disparities were introduced in a selected band of stimulus orientations. A band of orientation was defined by a center orientation that ranged from 7.5 (near vertical) to 82.5 o[rientation]deg and by a bandwidth ...

Effect of crosstalk on depth magnitude in thin structures

Stereoscopic displays must present separate images to the viewer’s left and right eyes. Crosstalk is the unwanted contamination of one eye’s image from the image of the other eye. It has been shown to cause distortions, reduce visual comfort, and increase perceived workload during the performance of visual tasks. Crosstalk also affects one’s ability to perceive stereoscopic depth although littl...

Augmented Stereo Panoramas

Panoramas and object movies are popular image-based techniques for modeling and rendering 3D scenes and objects. In this paper, we present a method which allows the authors of virtual exhibition systems to produce an augmented stereo panorama by interactively integrating stereo object movies into a stereo panorama. When navigating in the augmented stereo panorama with a stereoscopic display, th...

Unconstrained stereoscopic matching of lines

The computation of horizontal binocular disparities used in stereoscopic depth perception depends upon the identification of corresponding features in the two retinal images. In principle, binocular matching is a two-dimensional problem that considers matches in all possible meridians. Normally, constraints such as end points or crossing points limit the direction and magnitude of matches. If m...
