چکیده

Decomposing the Gender Wage Gap in the Netherlands with Sample Selection Adjustments In this paper, we use quantile regression decomposition methods to analyze the gender gap between men and women who work full time in the Netherlands. Because the fraction of women working full time in the Netherlands is quite low, sample selection is a serious issue. In addition to shedding light on the sources of the gender gap in the Netherlands, we make two methodological contributions. First, we prove that the Machado-Mata quantile regression decomposition procedure yields consistent and asymptotically normal estimates of the quantiles of the counterfactual distribution that it is designed to simulate. Second, we show how the technique can be extended to account for selection. We find that there is a positive selection of women into full-time work in the Netherlands; i.e., women who get the greatest return to working full time do work full time. We find that about two thirds of this selection is due to observables such as education and experience with the remainder due to unobservables. Our decompositions show that the majority of the gender log wage gap is due to differences between men and women in returns to labor market characteristics rather than to differences in the characteristics. This is true across the wage distribution, particularly in the top half of the distribution. JEL Classification: C24, J22, J31, J71

Counterfactual Distributions with Sample Selection Adjustments: Econometric Theory and an Application to the Netherlands

Several recent papers use the quantile regression decomposition method of Machado and Mata (2005) to analyze the gender gap across log wage distributions. In this paper, we prove that this procedure yields consistent and asymptotically normal estimates of the quantiles of the counterfactual distribution that it is designed to simulate. Since employment rates often differ substantially by gender...

Gender Wage Discrimination in Rural and Urban Labour Markets of Bangladesh

Female wages in Bangladesh are significantly lower compared to male wages. This paper seeks to quantify the extent of discrimination in explaining this gender wage gap. We decompose the gender wage differential into a component that can be explained by differences in productive characteristics and a component unexplained by observable productive differences, which are attributed to discriminati...

Gender Differences in Managerial Compensation - Evidences from Denmark

This paper examines the gender earnings gap at the executive level on a unique data set of Danish executives in the period 1992-1995. Ordinary wage equations show that the wage gap disappears when controlling for “Who you are”, “Where you work” and “What you do”. Additionally, decomposition into interand intra-occupational differences shows that two thirds of the wage gap are due to differences...

An Impact of Globalization on Gender Wage Inequality: A case Study of Selected Developing Countries

Globalization may have different impacts on the gender wage gap depending on the specialization and trade pattern as well as the socio-economic situation. The main purpose of this paper is to examine an impact of globalization on gender wage inequality. Specifically, the hypothesis is that globalization reduces gender wage gap. For this, we have employed a panel technique for 21 selected develo...

Trends in the gender wage gap and gender discrimination among part-time and full-time workers in post-apartheid South Africa

Using nationally representative household survey data from 1995 to 2006, this paper explores the gender wage gap among part-time and full-time salaried workers in post-apartheid South Africa, considering speci…cally how the magnitude of the gender-wage gap and the factors contributing to this gap have changed over time. The results, which are robust to the imputation of values for missing earni...
