An Operative Series of Lumbar Intervertebral Discs
نویسنده
چکیده
THIS is a review of one hundred cases taken from approximately five hundred cases operated upon in Musgrave Park Hospital during the past twelve years. These cases have been selected because of positive findings of disc prolapse demonstrated at operation. The time from operation varies from twelve years to one year, the average length of follow-up being seven years and the majority of cases being at least five years since operation. In looking at these figures it should be appreciated that considerable filtering of diagnosed cases occur before coming to surgery. Firstly, the general practitioners realize that complete bed rest is often sufficient and a patient arriving at hospital has already had this and perhaps other adjuncts such as plaster of paris casts. It is difficult to estimate, but probably only one-third of the cases with prolapsed discs entering hospital eventually require surgical treatment.

Measuring Dimensions of Lumbar Intervertebral Discs in Normal Subjects
Introduction: Disc degeneration is a natural aging process characterized by changes in appearance and chemical structure of the disc. This degeneration leads to back pain. In regard to the limitation of current therapeutical methods for patients with degenerated discs, arthroplasty has been suggested as an alternative method. To manufacture artificial discs for Iranians, determining normal lumb...
متن کاملLateral Surgical Approach to Lumbar Intervertebral Discs in an Ovine Model
The sheep is becoming increasingly used as a large animal model for preclinical spine surgery studies. Access to the ovine lumbar intervertebral discs has traditionally been via an anterior or anterolateral approach, which requires larger wound incisions and, at times, significant abdominal retraction. We present a new minimally invasive operative technique for a far-lateral approach to the ovi...
متن کاملIncrease of nerve growth factor levels in the human herniated intervertebral disc: can annular rupture trigger discogenic back pain?
INTRODUCTION Nerve growth factor (NGF) has an important role in the generation of discogenic pain. We hypothesized that annular rupture is a trigger for discogenic pain through the action of NGF. In this study, the protein levels of NGF in discs from patients with disc herniation were examined and compared with those from discs of patients with other lumbar degenerative disc diseases. METHODS...
متن کاملSurgically Treated Symptomatic Prolapsed Lumbar and Sacral Intervertebral Discs in Females: A Comparative Study of Incidence and Causative Factors and Treatment
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE There are various postulated possible causes of surgically symptomatic prolapsed intervertebral discs in the lumbar and sacral regions. They may be acting singularly or collectively. Yet, these factors, which could vary in different environments, have not been satisfactorily confirmed. The intention of this study is to share the experience of the author in the occurrenc...
متن کاملFinite element study of healthy, pathological and surgical lumbar spine biomechanics
Lumbar pain is one of the most common problems of population. Far too often it is caused by ageing and degeneration of intervertebral discs (IVD). Fusion techniques, as arthrodesis, were the first surgeries used to avoid lumbar pathologies. However, arthrodesis reduced dramatically the spine movement. So the aim of this work was to study numerically how different pathologies affect lumbar spine...

STUDY DESIGN Patients scheduled for spinal surgery were screened prospectively for a microbial presence associated with intervertebral disc specimens. Inclusion was limited to patients requiring surgery for any of five conditions: study patients with cervical spine intervertebral herniation (IVH), lumbar spine IVH, lumbar spine discogenic pain, and control patients with idiopathic scoliosis/Sch...
