چکیده

The nucleoli in 4 regions of the root meristem of Zea mays have been examined and the time spent in each of the phases of the nucleolar cycle has been calculated from estimates of the rates of mitosis and the fraction of cycling cells in each region. The nucleolar cycles have been fitted to the mitotic cycles of cycling cells in the same regions. The timing of activity of the r-RNA genes differs in relation to the chromosomal cycles of condensation and movement in the different regions of the meristem. In the stelar regions disorganization of the nucleolus starts in the middle of prophase and reorganization starts towards the end of telophase and is completed in the following interphase. In the quiescent centre of the meristem the phases of both cycles are lengthened except for telophase and reorganization of the nucleolus docs not start until after the end of telophase. The acceleration of telophase in the quiescent centre is discussed in relation to inhibition of protein synthesis. In the adjacent cap initials, which have the shortest mitotic cycle, the nucleolus starts to disorganize before the onset of prophase and reorganization is completed halfway through telophase. This fits with the fact that DNA synthesis is advanced into the telophase of the previous cycle in these cells.

Action of bleomycin on proliferating plant cells.

Bleomycin (10-(6) M) has been tested in Allium cepa L. meristems which are formed by a proliferating cell population growing under steady state conditions. Chromosome breaks were apparently induced by the antibiotic in cells in G2 period since anaphases with chromatid breaks were formed at a time shorter than G2 + prophase duration. Stimulation of entrance of G2 cells into mitosis is suggested ...

Nucleolar Organizer Regions of Oral Epithelial Cells in Crack Cocaine Users

Background: The health risks of crack cocaine smoking on the oral mucosa has not been widely researched and documented. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the proliferative activity of oral epithelial cells exposed to crack cocaine smoke using silver nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) staining. Methods: Oral smears were collected from clinically normal-appearing buccal mucosa b...

Nucleolar development in the interphase of the cell cycle.

Stereology of nucleoli at 3 different points of the cell cycle, in the middle of the Gu S and Gt of interphase, was accomplished in a naturally synchronous cell population rendered binucleate and thus 'labelled' and made identifiable by 1 h caffeine treatment in root meristems of AUium cepa L. Consistent structural changes were found so that nucleolar parameters by themselves can locate a cell ...

Postembryonic Establishment of Megabase-Scale Gene Silencing in Nucleolar Dominance

Nucleolar dominance is an epigenetic phenomenon in plant and animal genetic hybrids that describes the expression of 45S ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA genes) inherited from only one progenitor due to the silencing of the other progenitor's rRNA genes. rRNA genes are tandemly arrayed at nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) that span millions of basepairs, thus gene silencing in nucleolar dominance occ...

Spike timing dependent plasticity: mechanisms, significance, and controversies

Long-term modification of synaptic strength is one of the basic mechanisms of memory formation and activity-dependent refinement of neural circuits. This idea was purposed by Hebb to provide a basis for the formation of a cell assembly. Repetitive correlated activity of pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons can induce long-lasting synaptic strength modification, the direction and extent of whi...
