Characterising action potential in virtual game worlds applied with the mind module

چکیده
Because games set in persistent virtual game worlds (VGWs) have massive numbers of players, these games need methods of characterisation for playable characters (PCs) that differ from the methods used in traditional narrative media. VGWs have a number of particularly interesting qualities. Firstly, VGWs are places where players interact with and create elements carrying narrative potential. Secondly, players add goals, motives and driving forces to the narrative potential of a VGW, which sometimes originates from the ordinary world. Thirdly, the protagonists of the world are real people, and when acting in the world their characterisation is not carried out by an author, but expressed by players characterising their PCs. How they can express themselves in ways that characterise them depend on what they can do, and how they can do it, and this characterising action potential (CAP) is defined by the game design of particular VGWs. In this thesis, two main questions are explored. Firstly, how can CAP be designed to support players in expressing consistent characters in VGWs? Secondly, how can VGWs support role-play in their rule-systems? By using iterative design, I explore the design space of CAP by building a semiautonomous agent structure, the Mind Module (MM) and apply it in five experimental prototypes where the design of CAP and other game features is derived from the MM. The term semiautonomy is used because

Emotional Attachments for Story Construction in Virtual Game Worlds
In the virtual game world prototype World of Minds that uses the Mind Module, a semi-autonomous agent architecture, the notion of sentiments, or emotional attachments between objects, is what constitutes the deep structure in the game world. In this paper a play test is presented where sentiments are instantiated in three different ways; randomly, by choice of the player and through interaction...
متن کاملSemi-Autonomous Avatars in Virtual Game Worlds
This paper is concerned with approaches to semi-autonomous avatars in virtual game worlds, and degrees of autonomy in relation to player-control. Approaches to semi-autonomous avatars can be divided into three groups based on the design goals of using them: relief, expression and impression. Players can be relieved of cognitive and operational load by for example automating the animations of bo...
متن کاملPresence and Flow: Ill-Fitting Clothes for Virtual Worlds
Virtual worlds are a class of computer game in which large numbers of players access a shared environment simultaneously to have fun. What “having fun” means, however, is not obvious. Players talk about immersion, which suggests to some commentators that their fun may derive from the well-known psychological concepts of presence and flow. However, although these states of mind are indeed import...

Digital games seem to have enormous educational potential. But something goes wrong. Although the field of digital games is booming, games that are designed with an educational purpose in mind have a large variety of deficiencies. The treatment of knowledge in games is a decisive factor. There is an obvious difficulty of balancing the virtual vs. the real–a phenomenon in games that is not yet w...
