چکیده

A virtual museum guide agent that uses human relationship-building behaviors to engage museum visitors is described. The agent, named “Tinker”, appears in the form of a human-sized anthropomorphic robot, and uses nonverbal conversational behavior, empathy, social dialogue, reciprocal selfdisclosure and other relational behavior to establish social bonds with users. Tinker can describe exhibits in the museum, give directions, and discuss technical aspects of her own implementation. Results from an experiment involving 1,607 visitors indicate that the use of relational behavior leads to significantly greater engagement by museum visitors, measured by session length, number of sessions, and self-reported attitude, as well as learning gains, as measured by a knowledge test, compared to the same agent that did not use relational behavior. Implications for museum exhibits and intelligent tutoring systems are discussed.

The identification of users by relational agents

Virtual agents designed to establish relationships with more than one user must be able to identify and distinguish among those users with high reliability. We describe an approach for relational agents in public spaces to identify repeat users based on two strategies: a biometric identification system based on hand geometry, and an identification dialogue that references previous conversations...

Play in the Museum: Design and Development of a Game-Based Learning Exhibit for Informal Science Education

Digital games have been found to yield effective and engaging learning experiences across a broad range of subjects. Much of this research has been conducted in laboratory and K-12 classrooms. Recent advances in game technologies are expanding the range of educational contexts where game-based learning environments can be deployed, including informal settings such as museums and science centers...

Designing opportunistic user interfaces to support a collaborative museum exhibit

This research explores how to support collaborative learning practices when science museum visitors employ their own personal mobile devices as Opportunistic User Interfaces (OUIs) to manipulate a simulation-based museum exhibit. The sophisticated graphical capabilities of modern mobile devices have the potential to distract visitors, a phenomenon known as the headsdown effect. To study the imp...

New Ways of Looking and Learning in Natural History Museums: The Use of Gigapixel Imaging to Bring Science and Publics Together

This article describes a series of demonstration projects that use multiscalar gigapixel image technology to iteratively design, test, and study how visitors learn to observe more scientifically in museums, online, and through museum-based programming. We consider how the particular affordances of systems like these can move science communication and learning from didactic approaches centered o...

Facilitating Learning Through Hands-on Engagement With Virtual Museum Artefacts

In collaborative museum learning contexts, it is problematic that groups of museum visitors are not able able to touch, handle, and pass museum artefacts around during collaborative discussions. This can be due to the fragility of the artefacts themselves or due to the people discussing them being in different locations. Interacting with virtual representations of artefacts is a solution to the...
