Oral Versus IV Treatment for Catheter-related Bloodstream Infections
نویسندگان
چکیده
B. burgdorferi–infected I. scapularis now includes northern Cook and Lake counties. More importantly, the high percentage of B. burgdorferi–infected ticks in this region confi rms a newly recognized signifi cant risk of Lyme disease in suburban areas adjacent to Chicago (population ≈7 million). Recently, the Infectious Diseases Society of America recommended that clinicians consider prescribing a single prophylactic dose of doxycycline (200 mg) when patients have received tick bites in areas where the percentage of B. burgdorferi–infected I. scapularis exceeds 20% (6,7). The high percentage of infected adult ticks identifi ed in this survey highlights the need for physicians in the Chicago area to become familiar with this recommendation, especially considering the high likelihood that nymphal I. scapularis ticks are similarly infected (1). Moreover, confi rmation of the increasing risk of contracting Lyme disease near metropolitan Chicago should provide impetus for more comprehensive studies to completely defi ne the risk of this potentially serious illness.

Review of recommendations to prevent and reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections
ABSTRACT Aim. We sought to review studies regarding interventions to prevent or reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Background. CRBSIs are associated with peripheral and central intravenous catheters, including nontunneled central catheters, tunneled central catheters, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), totally implanted intravascular access devices (por...
متن کاملTaurolidine lock is highly effective in preventing catheter-related bloodstream infections in patients on home parenteral nutrition: a heparin-controlled prospective trial.
BACKGROUND & AIMS Catheter-related bloodstream infections remain the major threat for Home Parenteral Nutrition programs. Taurolidine, a potent antimicrobial agent, holds promise as an effective catheter lock to prevent such infections. Aim of the present study was to compare taurolidine with heparin, the most frequently used lock, in this respect in these high-risk patients. METHODS Thirty p...
متن کاملChlorhexidine compared with povidone-iodine solution for vascular catheter-site care: a meta-analysis.
PURPOSE Bloodstream infections related to use of catheters, particularly central-line catheters, are an important cause of patient morbidity, mortality, and increased health care costs. This study evaluated the efficacy of skin disinfection with chlorhexidine gluconate compared with povidone-iodine solution in preventing catheter-related bloodstream infection. DATA SOURCES Multiple computeriz...
متن کاملUse of chlorhexidine-impregnated dressing to prevent vascular and epidural catheter colonization and infection: a meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVES Vascular and epidural catheter-related infections cause significant morbidities and mortality in hospitalized patients. This meta-analysis assessed the effect of chlorhexidine-impregnated dressing on the risk of vascular and epidural catheter bacterial colonization and infection. METHODS Literature search was based on MEDLINE (1966 to 1 November 2005), EMBASE and Cochrane Controlle...
متن کاملPrevention of nosocomial bloodstream infections: effectiveness of antimicrobial-impregnated and heparin-bonded central venous catheters.
OBJECTIVES To examine the effectiveness of antimicrobial-impregnated and heparin-bonded catheters relative to standard central venous catheters in lessening catheter-related bloodstream infections. DATA SOURCES Articles were identified by computer-assisted searching. STUDY SELECTION Studies were eliminated from further consideration if they did not contain original data relevant to lessenin...
متن کاملTaurolidine lock: the key to prevention of recurrent catheter-related bloodstream infections.
The literature shows that repeated courses of antibiotics and catheter removals in a subset of patients suffering from multiple catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI), are unlikely to prevent recurrence. In acceding to preventative strategies, we report our application of the antimicrobial chemotherapeutic Taurolidine used as a daily flush solution in seven home TPN patients suffering ...
