Implantable Multi - Reservoir Microfluidic Device for Insect Cyborg Flight Controls
نویسنده
چکیده
This work describes an implantable microreservoir device that enables delivery of dose volumes using an electrochemically based transport mechanism intended to use for insect flight controls. We present the overall design, operating principle and construction of the device, and experimental results. This effort is a critical component in our development of “Insect Micro-Air-Vehicles” which aim to fuse nanodevice technology with living organism.

MEMS-Based Muscle Interfaces for Insect Cyborg Control
We, for the first time, demonstrated a reliable hybrid tissue-electronics interface in insects, by using silicon probes and inserting them at an early pupae stage so that the tissue grows around the probes for a highly natural implant in the insect. This work paves the way for future engineering approaches to utilize the bioelectronic interfaces and to create insect cyborgs. A successful emerge...

We demonstrated the remote control of insects in free flight via an implantable radio-equipped miniature neural stimulating system. The system consisted of neural stimulators, muscular stimulators, a radio transceiver-equipped microcontroller and a microbattery. Flight initiation, cessation and elevation control were accomplished through neural stimulus of the brain which elicited, suppressed o...

This work describes the intimate fusion of microsystems and physiology though the implantation of a microfluidic device into living insects. Specifically, we focus on the control of Manduca sexta moth flight activity using an implanted, low power electrokinetic drug delivery device. This effort is a critical component in our development of “Insect Micro-Air-Vehicles” which aim to fuse nanodevic...

For decades, scientists and engineers have been fascinated by cybernetic organisms, or cyborgs, that fuse artificial and natural systems. Cyborgs enable harnessing biological systems that have been honed by evolutionary forces over millennia to achieve astounding feats. Male moths can detect a single pheromone molecule, a sensitivity of roughly 10 grams. Thus, cyborgs can perform tasks at scale...
متن کاملElectrical Stimulation of Coleopteran Muscle for Initiating Flight
Some researchers have long been interested in reconstructing natural insects into steerable robots or vehicles. However, until recently, these so-called cyborg insects, biobots, or living machines existed only in science fiction. Owing to recent advances in nano/micro manufacturing, data processing, and anatomical and physiological biology, we can now stimulate living insects to induce user-des...
