چکیده

Speakers of a given language vary with respect to their acoustics, articulation, and motor commands. This variation is driven by a variety of influences, such as emotional states, communicative interaction, and individual properties of the vocal tract. In this work we focus on the latter. First, we build speaker-specific biomechanical tongue models. Second, we discuss the impact of the relative position of the bending in the vocal tract on the basis of extensive simulations with two different models. We focus on /i,a,u/ by defining target regions in the acoustic space, and discuss the corresponding speakerspecific articulatory and motor command variability observed.

Predicting unseen articulations from multi-speaker articulatory models

In order to study inter-speaker variability, this work aims to assess the generalization capabilities of data-based multi-speaker articulatory models. We use various three-mode factor analysis techniques to model the variations of midsagittal vocal tract contours obtained from MRI images for three French speakers articulating 73 vowels and consonants. Articulations of a given speaker for phonem...

Nepalese retroflex stops: a static palatography study of inter- and intra-speaker variability

Retroflex sounds are classically defined as produced with the tongue tip curled backward and often in contact behind the alveolar ridge ([1], [2], [3]). The sounds, however, present a great inter-language, interand intra-speaker articulatory variation. Retroflex stops in Nepali, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Nepal, are produced with the tongue tip with no backward curling movement at the alv...

Subject-specific biomechanical modelling of the oropharynx: towards speech production

Biomechanical models of the oropharynx are beneficial to treatment planning of speech impediments by providing valuable insight into the speech function such as motor control. In this paper, we develop a subject-specific model of the oropharynx and investigate its utility in speech production. Our approach adapts a generic tongue-jaw-hyoid model (Stavness et al. 2011) to fit and track dynamic v...

Accent Recognition for Indian English using Acoustic Feature Approach

Accent is the basic pattern of acoustic feature and pronunciation. It can identify the person’s social and linguistic background. It is an important source of inter as well as intra speaker variability. The accent dependent dictionary or model can be used to improve accuracy of speech recognition system. In this study we present an experimental approach of acoustic speech feature for Marathi & ...

Speaker-Specific Biomechanical Model-Based Investigation of a Simple Speech Task Based on Tagged-MRI

We create two 3D biomechanical speaker models matched to medical image data of two healthy English speakers. We use a new, hybrid registration technique that morphs a generic 3D, biomechanical model to medical images. The generic model of the head and neck includes jaw, tongue, soft-palate, epiglottis, lips and face, and is capable of simulating upper-airway biomechanics. We use cine and tagged...
