T-Form colonies of pleuropneumonialike organisms.

چکیده
During the course of previous studies on pleuropneuimonialike organisms (PPLO) and their possible role in the etiology of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), a minute, morphologically distinct PPLO colony form was observed (Shepard, 1954.) More recent studies have substantiated this observation. These minute colonies of pleuropneumonialike organisms were designated T-form (tiny) PPLO colonies. They were recovered in primary culture (in addition to other, well characterized PPLO colony types) from the anterior urethra of men with nongonococcal urethritis. It is the purpose of this report to describe the morphology and discuss the properties of T-form colonies of pleuropneumonialike organisms from human beings.

Reduction of tetrazolium salts by pleuropneumonialike organisms.
Tetrazolium salts have proved useful as indicators of electron transfer. Compounds such as triphenyltetrazolium chloride' are more practical than indicators like methylene blue since they are converted from a soluble colorless salt to an insoluble formazan in the reduced state. They also provide similar convenience in detecting enzymatic activity and specific sites of such activity (Bielig, Kau...

The prevalence of pleuropneumonialike organisms (PPLO) has been summarized by Morton et al. (1952). Their incidence and significance in infections of the genitourinary tract have been discussed by Ruiter and Wentholt (1953a) and Edward (1952). Subsequent reports of the finding of these organisms in infections of man (Slingerland and Morgan, 1952; Ruiter and Wentholt, 1953b) and of poultry (Mark...

Previous investigations have demonstrated the existence of basophilic, intracytoplasmic inclusions in epithelial cells obtained from the anterior urethra of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) patients (Johnston and McEwin, 1945; Harkness, 1945, 1950; Williams, 1946; Harkness and Henderson-Begg, 1948). Pleuropneumonialike organisms (PPLO) were frequently recovered in culture from these NGU patients ...
متن کاملThe influence of penicillin on large body production by luminous bacteria.
The normal occurrence of large bodies in young cultures of the marine luminous bacterium Achromobacter fischeri has been recently observed (Johnson and Gray, 1949). This report deals with the influence of penicillin, which in appropriate concentrations has been shown to favor the production of large bodies, as well as Li types of cells and colonies, both in common bacteria such as Escherichia c...
متن کاملStability of Pleuropneumonialike
The increased significance of pleuropneumonialike organisms has spurred many laboratories to engage in programs relating these organisms to both human and animal diseases. This has resulted in the need for mass production of antigens for diagnostic purposes and in the need for maintenance of rather extensive stock culture collections. Problems of handling encountered in such undertakings requir...
