GOSSIP: Gossip Over Storage Systems Is Practical

چکیده
Gossip-based mechanisms are touted for their simplicity, limited resource usage, robustness to failures, and tunable system behavior. These qualities make gossiping an ideal mechanism for storage systems that are responsible for maintaining and updating data in a mist of failures and limited resources (e.g., intermittent network connectivity, limited bandwidth, constrained communication range, or limited battery power). We focus on persistent storage systems that, unlike mere caches, are responsible for the durability and consistency of data. Examples of such systems may be encountered in many different environments, in particular: wide-area networks (limited bandwidth), wireless sensor networks (limited resources), and mobile ad hoc networks (intermittent connectivity). In this paper, we demonstrate the qualities of gossiping in these three respective environ-

GGRA: a grouped gossip-based reputation aggregation algorithm
An important issue in P2P networks is the existence of malicious nodes that decreases the performance of such networks. Reputation system in which nodes are ranked based on their behavior, is one of the proposed solutions to detect and isolate malicious (low ranked) nodes. Gossip Trust is an interesting previously proposed algorithm for reputation aggregation in P2P networks based on t...

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...

متن کاملIn Praise of Gossip: The Organizational Functions and Practical Applications of Rumours in the Workplace
Workplace gossip is a ubiquitous phenomenon around the world: research on organizations in both the United States and Western Europe suggests that over 90% of the workforce engages in at least some gossip activity on the job (Gosser et al., 2012). Organizational literature has paid little attention to gossip and, perhaps because of its complexity, management research surrounding gossip is scant...
متن کاملOn Gossip and Populations
Gossip protocols are simple, robust and scalable and have been consistently applied to many (mostly wired) distributed systems. Nevertheless, most validation in this area has been empirical so far and there is a lack of a theoretical counterpart to characterize what can and cannot be computed with gossip protocols. Population protocols, on the other hand, benefit from a sound theoretical framew...
