Development of a Fast Traveling-wave Beam Chopper for the National Spallation Neutron Source*
نویسندگان
چکیده
High current and severe restrictions on beam losses, below 1 nA/m, in the designed linac for the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS) require clean and fast — with the rise time from 2% to 98% less than 2.5 ns to accommodate a 402.5-MHz beam structure — beam chopping in its front end, at the beam energy 2.5 MeV. The R&D program includes both modification of the existing LANSCE coax-plate chopper to reduce parasitic coupling between adjacent plates, and development of new traveling-wave deflecting structures, in particular, based on a meander line. Using analytical methods and three-dimensional time-domain computer simulations we study transient effects in such structures to choose an optimal chopper design.

Electromagnetic Modeling of Fast Beam Chopper for Sns Project
High current and stringent restrictions on beam losses in the designed linac and storage ring for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) require clean and fast – with the rise time from 2% to 98% less than 2.5 ns – beam chopping in the linac front end, at the beam energy 2.5 MeV. The development of new traveling-wave deflecting current structures, based on meander lines, for the SNS fast chopper i...
متن کاملMeander-line Current Structure Development for Sns Fast Chopper
A new current structure for the fast traveling-wave 2.5MeV beam chopper in the front end of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) has been suggested in [1]. The structure is based on the meander-folded notched stripline with dielectric supports and separators. Its design has been optimized using electromagnetic 3-D modeling with the MAFIA code package to provide rise and fall times in the range o...
متن کاملAtomic pair distribution function analysis from the ARCS chopper spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source
Neutron powder diffraction based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) are reported from the new wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The spectrometer was run in white-beam mode with no Fermi chopper. The PDF patterns of Ni and Al2O3 were refined using the PDFfit method and the results compared to data c...

The Front End Test Stand (FETS) under construction at RAL is a demonstrator for front end systems of a future high power proton linac. Possible applications include a linac upgrade for the ISIS spallation neutron source, new future neutron sources, accelerator driven sub-critical systems, high energy physics proton drivers etc. Designed to deliver a 60mA H-minus beam at 3MeV with a 10% duty fac...
متن کاملPrinciples for Timing at Spallation Neutron Sources Based on Developments at Lansce
Due to AC-power-grid frequency fluctuations, the designers for accelerator-based spallation-neutron facilities have worked to optimize the conflicting demands of accelerator and neutron chopper performance. For the first time, we are able to quantitatively access the tradeoffs between these two constraints and design or upgrade a facility to optimize total system performance using powerful new ...
