چکیده

We have determined the column densities of UV absorption lines in 4 Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) optical transients, using the curve of growth analysis. From a direct comparison with the column densities of the same elements observed in damped Lyman–α (DLA) systems along QSO sight lines, we unambiguously find that 3 GRB–DLAs are characterized by much higher column densities of ZnII with respect to QSO–DLAs. The relative abundances of [Fe/Zn], [Si/Zn] and [Cr/Zn] as a function of ZnII column density in QSO–DLAs, are smaller at larger N ZnII. These trends are confirmed by the GRB–DLA measurements, being located at the lower [X/Zn] and higher ZnII column part of the QSO– DLA distribution. Very small [Fe/Zn], [Si/Zn] and [Cr/Zn] values in GRBs also indicate a large dust depletion and extinction. Once the dust–to–metals ratios are determined in 3 GRBs, we find A V = 0.6, 0.9 and 1.1 mags, to be compared with typical A V ∼ < 0.1 in QSO–DLAs. All our findings support the idea that QSOs (fainter than GRBs) can only probe low gas/dust regions of high redshift galaxies, while GRBs can be seen through denser regions (molecular clouds and star forming regions) of high redshift galaxies. Therefore GRB–DLAs and QSO– DLAs together provide a more complete picture of the global properties of the interstellar medium in high redshift galaxies.

Heavy Element Abundances and Dust Depletions in the Host Galaxies of Three Gamma–Ray Bursts

We have derived the column densities of heavy elements in three gamma–ray burst (GRB) optical transients, associated with the circumburst or interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. In comparison with the same elements observed in damped Lyman–α (DLA) systems along QSO sight lines, we find evidence for much higher column densities of Zn II. The gap between the QSO–DLA and GRB–DLA distribut...

Dust Depletion and Extinction in a Gamma-ray Burst Afterglow

We put stringent constraints for the first time on the dust properties in the circumburst medium of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow. This is based on the optical spectrum of GRB 020813 (z = 1.255), obtained with Keck I LRIS 4.65 h after the burst. From the absorption lines in the spectrum, we derive very high column densities for six heavy elements with different refractory properties. The re...

Behaviors of X-ray Dust-Scattering and Implications for X-ray Afterglows of Gamma-Ray Bursts

The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been commonly assumed to be due to shocks sweeping up circum-stellar medium. However, most of them have been found to be hosting in dense star-forming regions where a significant fraction of the prompt X-ray emission can be scattered by dust grains. Here we revisit the behaviors of X-ray dust-scattering in GRBs. We find that the features of some X-...

Dust - scattered X - ray halos around gamma - ray bursts : GRB 031203 revisited and the new case of GRB 050713 A ⋆

Scattering by interstellar dust grains can produce time variable X-ray halos around gamma-ray bursts (GRB). In particular, an X-ray expanding ring is expected when a short pulse of X-ray radiation is scattered by a narrow layer of dust in our Galaxy. We present a new method to detect and analyze dust scattering expanding rings around gamma-ray bursts, using as an example XMM-Newton data of GRB ...
