BMPs: Conserved Morphogens in Neural Patterning
نویسنده
چکیده
-The concentration of 5-fluorouracil (FU) in thoracic-duct lymph, portalvein blood and peripheral arterial blood of beagle dogs was greater after administration into the submucosa of the stomach than after the bolus i.v. injection. The concentration of FU in thoracic-duct lymph, portal-vein blood and arterial blood was least following administration into the lumen of the stomach. The total FU recovered over 6 h from thoracic-duct lymph was compared following the three routes of administration and was found to be greatest following injection into the submucosa of stomach.

Threshold-Dependent BMP-Mediated Repression: A Model for a Conserved Mechanism That Patterns the Neuroectoderm
Subdivision of the neuroectoderm into three rows of cells along the dorsal-ventral axis by neural identity genes is a highly conserved developmental process. While neural identity genes are expressed in remarkably similar patterns in vertebrates and invertebrates, previous work suggests that these patterns may be regulated by distinct upstream genetic pathways. Here we ask whether a potential c...
متن کاملBMP signaling in telencephalic neural cell specification and maturation
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) make up a family of morphogens that are critical for patterning, development, and function of the central and peripheral nervous system. Their effects on neural cells are pleiotropic and highly dynamic depending on the stage of development and the local niche. Neural cells display a broad expression profile of BMP ligands, receptors, and transducer molecules. ...
متن کاملEMBRYO DEVELOPMENT. BMP gradients: A paradigm for morphogen-mediated developmental patterning.
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) act in dose-dependent fashion to regulate cell fate choices in a myriad of developmental contexts. In early vertebrate and invertebrate embryos, BMPs and their antagonists establish epidermal versus central nervous system domains. In this highly conserved system, BMP antagonists mediate the neural-inductive activities proposed by Hans Spemann and Hilde Mangold...
متن کاملBMPs Regulate msx Gene Expression in the Dorsal Neuroectoderm of Drosophila and Vertebrates by Distinct Mechanisms
In a broad variety of bilaterian species the trunk central nervous system (CNS) derives from three primary rows of neuroblasts. The fates of these neural progenitor cells are determined in part by three conserved transcription factors: vnd/nkx2.2, ind/gsh and msh/msx in Drosophila melanogaster/vertebrates, which are expressed in corresponding non-overlapping patterns along the dorsal-ventral ax...
متن کاملShaping BMP morphogen gradients in the Drosophila embryo and pupal wings
In the early Drosophila embryo, BMP-type ligands act as morphogens to suppress neural induction and to specify the formation of dorsal ectoderm and amnioserosa. Likewise, during pupal wing development, BMPs help to specify vein versus intervein cell fate. Here, we review recent data suggesting that these two processes use a related set of extracellular factors, positive feedback, and BMP hetero...
