چکیده

This chapter describes a technique that can geo-localize arbitrary 2D depictions of architectural sites, including drawings, paintings and historical photographs. This is achieved by aligning the input depiction with a 3D model of the corresponding site. The task is very difficult as the appearance and scene structure in the 2D depictions can be very different from the appearance and geometry of the 3D model, e.g., due to the specific rendering style, drawing error, age, lighting or change of seasons. In addition, we face a hard search problem: the number of possible alignments of the depiction to a set of 3D models from different architectural sites is huge. To address these issues, we develop a compact representation of complex 3D scenes. 3D models of several scenes are represented by a set of discriminative visual elements that are automatically learnt from rendered views. Similar to object detection, the set of visual elements, as well as the weights of individual features for each element, are learnt in a discriminative fashion. We show that the learnt visual elements are reliably matched in 2D depictions of the scene despite large variations in rendering style (e.g. watercolor, sketch, historical photograph) and structural changes (e.g. missing scene parts, large occluders) of the scene. We demonstrate that the proposed approach can automatically identify the correct architectural site as well as recover an approximate viewpoint of historical photographs and paintings with respect to the 3D model of the site. From 2D photography to 3D object retrieval : contributions and benchmarking Méthodes 2D-3D pour l’indexation et la recherche d’images

3D retrieval has recently emerged as an important boost for 2D search techniques, by its several complementary aspects, for instance, enriching views in 2D image datasets, overcoming occlusion and serving in many real world applications such as photography, art, archeology and geo-localization. In this paper, we introduce a complete “2D photography to 3D object” retrieval framework which, given...

Investigation of electrokinetic mixing in 3D non-homogenous microchannels

A numerical study of 3D electrokinetic flows through micromixers was performed. The micromixers considered here consisted of heterogeneous rectangular microchannels with prescribed patterns of zeta-potential at their walls. Numerical simulation of electroosmotic flows within heterogeneous channels requires solution of the Navier-Stokes, Ernest-Plank and species concentration equations. It is kn...

An Exploratory Study Investigating Gender Effects on Using 3D Maps for Spatial Orientation in Wayfinding

3D representations in applications that provide self-localization and orientation in wayfinding have become increasingly popular in recent years because of technical advances in the field. However, human factors have been largely ignored while designing 3D representations in support of pedestrian navigation. This exploratory study aims to explore gender effects on using 3D maps for spatial orie...

Advancements in multi - view processing for reconstruction , registration and visualization . Luca Benedetti

The ever-increasing diffusion of digital cameras and the advancements in computer vision, image processing and storage capabilities have lead, in the latest years, to the wide diffusion of digital image collections. A set of digital images is usually referred as a multi-view images set when the pictures cover different views of the same physical object or location. In multi-view datasets, corre...
