چکیده

Maslinic acid is a pentacyclic triterpene found in plants used in traditional medicine with antidiabetic, antitumor, antioxidant and parasitostatic activities. A diet rich in foods of plant origin could provide a regular supply of this bioactive compound since it has been detected in olives, spinaches, eggplants, chickpeas and pomegranates. The multiple biological effects elicited by maslinic acid suggest its putative use as nutraceutical. This review summarizes our study on the safety, pharmacokinetics, and metabolism after the oral administration of maslinic acid, conducted with the aim of increasing the knowledge about the bioavailability of this bioactive food component.

A variety of biological properties have been ascribed to this class of compounds including antiinflammatory, hepatoprotective, gastroprotective, anti-ulcer, anti-HIV, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, hypolipidemic, antiatherosclerotic and immunoregulatory effects. As a part of our project aimed at drug discovery based on pharmacological interference with glucose metabolism, we hav...

Maslinic acid, a natural phytoalexin-type triterpene from olives--a promising nutraceutical?

Maslinic acid is a pentacyclic triterpene found in a variety of natural sources, ranging from herbal remedies used in traditional Asian medicine to edible vegetables and fruits present in the Mediterranean diet. In recent years, several studies have proved that maslinic acid exerts a wide range of biological activities, i.e. antitumor, antidiabetic, antioxidant, cardioprotective, neuroprotectiv...

Mechanistic Perspectives of Maslinic Acid in Targeting Inflammation

Chronic inflammation drives the development of various pathological diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. The arachidonic acid pathway represents one of the major mechanisms for inflammation. Prostaglandins (PGs) are lipid products generated from arachidonic acid by the action of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes and their activity is blocked by nons...

(2Alpha,3beta)-2,3-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid, a new natural triterpene from Olea europea, induces caspase dependent apoptosis selectively in colon adenocarcinoma cells.

Triterpenoids are known to induce apoptosis and to be anti-tumoural. Maslinic acid, a pentacyclic triterpene, is present in high concentrations in olive pomace. This study examines the response of HT29 and Caco-2 colon-cancer cell lines to maslinic-acid treatment. At concentrations inhibiting cell growth by 50-80% (IC50HT29=61+/-1 microM, IC80HT29=76+/-1 microM and IC50Caco-2=85+/-5 microM, IC8...

Maslinic acid promotes synaptogenesis and axon growth via Akt/GSK-3β activation in cerebral ischemia model.

Maslinic acid, a natural pentacyclic triterpene from Olea europaea plants, possesses neuroprotective effects both in vivo and in vitro. However, the mechanism of its action is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of maslinic acid on synaptogenesis and axonal regeneration, as well as the possible signal pathway involved in a cerebral ischemia mouse model. Adu...
