چکیده

Observations of the scale dependence of height-resolved temperature T and water vapor q variability are valuable for improved subgrid-scale climate model parameterizations and model evaluation. Variance spectral benchmarks for T and q obtained from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) are compared to those generated by state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction ‘‘analyses’’ and ‘‘free-running’’ climate model simulationswith spatial resolution comparable toAIRS. TheT and q spectra fromboth types ofmodels are generally too steep, with small-scale variance up to several factors smaller than AIRS. However, the two model analyses more closely resemble AIRS than the two free-running model simulations. Scaling exponents obtained for AIRS column water vapor (CWV) and height-resolved layers of q are also compared to the superparameterized Community Atmospheric Model (SP-CAM), highlighting large differences in the magnitude of CWV variance and the relative flatness of height-resolved q scaling in SP-CAM. Height-resolved q spectra obtained from aircraft observations during theVariability of theAmericanMonsoon SystemsOcean– Cloud–Atmosphere–Land Study Regional Experiment (VOCALS-REx) demonstrate changes in scaling exponents that depend on the observations’ proximity to the base of the subsidence inversion with scale breaks that occur at approximately the dominant cloud scale (;10–30 km). This suggests that finer spatial resolution requirements must be considered for future satellite observations of T and q than those currently planned for infrared and microwave satellite sounders.

Validation of Aqua satellite data in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere with in situ aircraft instruments

[1] Aircraft observations from a recent campaign spanning 0–40N latitude are compared to coincident observations from satellite sensors on board the Aqua satellite of temperature, ozone, water vapor and cloud properties in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Satellite observations compare well to aircraft data; temperature is generally within ±1.5 K and water vapor is within ±25% of a...

Analysis of temporal and spatial correlation between precipitable water vapor retrievals from AIRS satellite sensor and 29 synoptic station measurements in Iran

Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is one of the most important quantities in meteorology and climate studies. PWV in Earth's atmosphere can be measured by Sun-photometer, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and radiosonde from surface, atmosphere and space-based systems, respectively. In this paper, we use PWV measured by Sun-photometer located in Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Scien...

Development a split window algorithm to estimate land surface temperature from Sentinel -3 satellite data

Land Surface Temperature (LST) is an important indicator of the study of energy balance models at the earthchr('39')s surface and the interactions between the Earth and the atmosphere on a regional and global scale. To date, different algorithms have been developed in the last few decades to determine the land surface temperature using various satellite images. In this study, a new split window...

Estimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter

Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...

بررسی شرایط هواشناختی یخ‌زدگی هواپیما در دو بررسی موردی (فرودگاه مهرآباد-تهران)

Ice can form on aircraft surface at 0° C or colder temperatures when liquid water is present. This can happen both on the ground and at the flight levels of the aircraft. Aircraft icing has not only an impact on flight safety but has also an economic impact. According to the report of research department of the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), from 1982 to 2001, 13% of accidents due to ai...
