Polar spots and stellar spindown: is dynamo saturation needed?
نویسنده
چکیده
Dynamosaturation is often invokedwhen calculating the rotational evolution of cool stars. At rapid rotation rates a saturated dynamo reduces the angular momentum carried away by the stellar wind. This, in turn, may explain the high rotation rates present in the distribution of rotation periods in young clusters. Here we point out that concentration of magnetic flux near the poles of rapidly rotating cool stars provides an alternative to dynamo saturation. A high-latitude concentration of field on rapid rotators saturates the angular momentum loss induced by the stellar wind, due to the reduced torque arm.We show that the inclusion of this effect inmodel calculations is able to reproduce the observed high rotation rates without the need for dynamo saturation. Taken togetherwith the results ofO’Dell et al. (1995) this argues against dynamo saturation at low rotation rates.

Polar branches of stellar activity waves: dynamo models and observations
Aims. Stellar activity data provide evidence of activity wave branches propagating polewards rather than equatorwards (the solar case). This evidence is especially pronounced for the well-observed subgiant HR 1099. Stellar dynamo theory allows polewards propagating dynamo waves for certain governing parameters. In this paper, we try to unite observations and theory. Methods. Taking into account...

Using an unbiased subset of the s...
متن کاملThe Stellar Activity–rotation Relationship and the Evolution of Stellar Dynamos
We present a sample of 824 solar and late-type stars with X-ray luminosities and rotation periods. This is used to study the relationship between rotation and stellar activity and derive a new estimate of the convective turnover time. From an unbiased subset of this sample the power law slope of the unsaturated regime, LX/Lbol ∝ Ro , is fit as β = −2.70±0.13. This is inconsistent with the canon...
متن کاملFlip - flop phenomenon : observations and theory
In many active stars the spots concentrate on two permanent active longitudes which are 180◦ apart. In some of these stars the dominant part of the spot activity changes the longitude every few years. This so-called flip-flop phenomenon has up to now been reported in 11 stars, both single and binary alike, and including also the Sun. To explain this phenomenon, a non-axisymmetric dynamo mode, g...
متن کاملCoronal emission and dynamo saturation
We show that the observed saturation of X-ray emission with increasing rotation rate in solar-type stars does not necessarily imply saturation of the underlying dynamo. This effect can be caused by the centrifugal stripping of the corona. As the stellar rotation rate is increased, centrifugal forces cause a rise in the pressure and density in the outer parts of the largest magnetic loops. This ...
