چکیده

Section of the spinoand trigeminothalamic fibres at the level of the mesencephalon for intractable pain was first performed by Dogliotti (1938). A few years later Walker (1942a) developed a standard technique for section of the pain fibres at the level of the posterior margin of the superior colliculus, and later several cases of mesencephalic tractotomy were published (Guiot and Forjaz, 1947; David, Talairach, and Hecaen, 1947; Sj6quist, 1949; Walker, 1950; Schwartz, 1950; White and Sweet, 1955). Since this procedure involves a somewhat high mortality, attempts have been made at the Neurosurgical Clinic in Lund to destroy the spinothalamic tract at mesencephalic levels by stereotactic methods. So far the operation has been tried in only a few cases. The present report represents an analysis of the neurological and necropsy findings in two patients. Both cases presented were operated upon by Professor Leksell in Lund. The technique and apparatus employed have been described elsewhere (Leksell, 1957), and will only be briefly commented upon below.

Gallic acid and exercise training improve motor function, nerve conduction velocity but not pain sense reflex after experimental sciatic nerve crush in male rats

Objective: The aim of present study was to evaluate the effects of oral administration of gallic acid (GA) for 21 days alone and in combination with exercise on nerve conduction velocity and sensory and motor functions in rats with sciatic nerve crush. Materials and Methods: Seventy adult male Wistar rats (250-300 g) were divided randomly into 7 groups with 10 in each: 1) Control (Cont), 2) Cru...

Intrathecal transplantation of cultured calf chromaffin cells attenuate sensory motor dysfunction in a rat model of neuropathic pain

The potential usefulness of chromaffin cells as a source of neuroactive agents for transplantation in the CNS is based on several promising features, including the diversity of biologically active neurotransmitters, neuropeptides and trophic factors produced by the cells. The purpose of this study was to test the possibility that motor as well as sensory dysfunction is reduced by cultured chrom...

Current algorithm for the surgical treatment of facial pain

BACKGROUND Facial pain may be divided into several distinct categories, each requiring a specific treatment approach. In some cases, however, such categorization is difficult and treatment is ineffective. We reviewed our extensive clinical experience and designed an algorithmic approach to the treatment of medically intractable facial pain that can be treated through surgical intervention. ME...
