Reducing Losses When Feeding Hay to Beef Cattle
ثبت نشده
چکیده
show that hay costs between $0.02 and $0.07 per pound of dry matter; usually more than double the cost for the same amount of nutrients from pasture. Hay is expensive because (1) it requires a large investment in equipment, (2) it requires labor to make and feed, and (3) more than 50 percent of it is wasted by either poor storage methods or improper feeding practices, or both (Figure 1). This guide focuses on the last of these expenses — losses associated with feeding hay.

Nutritional Disorders in Beef Cattle - FSA3071
Nutritional disorders associated with both forage and feed consump tion can have a large impact on the profitability of beef cattle operations. Forages are an important component of beef cattle production systems in Arkansas. Most cowcalf and stocker cattle enterprises in Arkansas rely heavily on foragebased nutritional programs. Forages are used for both livestock grazing and hay production...
متن کاملThe changing impact of economics on managing bovine respiratory disease complex in feedlot cattle
The cattle market has set year-over-year record high prices since 2009. The increasing value of cattle has substantially increased the financial risk of feeding cattle, and has commensurately increased the economic losses from disease. As cattle feeding profitability continues to be challenged by the low margin between selling prices and operating costs, all facets of cattle feeding are being e...
متن کاملLimit-feeding corn as an alternative to hay for gestating beef cows.
Three experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of limit-feeding corn-based diets as an alternative to hay for beef cows in gestation and early lactation. Seventy or 71 mature, pregnant Simmental crossbred cows (average weight = 589 +/- 10 kg) were used in each trial. Each of 29 or 30 cows was fed approximately 5 kg of whole shelled corn, 1.2 kg of a pelletted supplement, and 1 kg of...
متن کاملEconomic impact of stable flies (Diptera: Muscidae) on dairy and beef cattle production.
Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), are among the most damaging arthropod pests of cattle worldwide. The last estimate of their economic impact on United States cattle production was published 20 yr ago and placed losses at $608 million. Subsequently, several studies of effects of stable flies on beef cattle weight gain and feed efficiency have been published, and stable flies have become i...

(allowed to eat according to appetite). Generally, this allows for maximum performance because energy consumed above the maintenance requirement is available for gain. However, recent work suggests that limit-fed animals may have better feed efficiency. This has economic importance in that changes in feed efficiency have three times the impact on cost of gain as an equal change in rate of gain....
