چکیده

Most patients who have taken a large dose of a beta-blocker will demonstrate bradycardia and hypotension. With very large doses there will be coma, convulsions and profound hypotension. A variety of cardiac dysrhythmias and ECG abnormalities are described. The more serious of these can result in cardiorespiratory arrest.2,3 These include: • heart block • intraventricular conduction defects • ST segment elevation • absent P waves, and • ventricular fibrillation or asystole.

The effects of cardioactive drugs on cardiomyocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Developing effective drug therapies for arrhythmic diseases is hampered by the fact that the same drug can work well in some individuals but not in others. Human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have been vetted as useful tools for drug screening. However, cardioactive drugs have not been shown to have the same effects on iPS cell-derived human cardiomyocytes as on embryonic stem (ES) cell-...

Machine learning plus optical flow: a simple and sensitive method to detect cardioactive drugs

Current preclinical screening methods do not adequately detect cardiotoxicity. Using human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPS-CMs), more physiologically relevant preclinical or patient-specific screening to detect potential cardiotoxic effects of drug candidates may be possible. However, one of the persistent challenges for developing a high-throughput drug screening plat...

The heart of Daphnia magna: effects of four cardioactive drugs.

We used Daphnia magna bioassays to determine the LC(50) and the effects on the heart of the cardioactive drugs ouabain, verapamil, metaproterenol and metoprolol. Distinctions were made between the pharmacological and toxicological effects of these drugs and the adequacy of physicochemical characteristics of its habitat (reconstituted water). Video microscopy and digital image processing were us...

Current and Emerging Detoxification Therapies for Critical Care

Toxicity resulting from prescription drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants and cardioactive steroids, as well as drugs of abuse and exposure to environmental chemicals, represents a major need for detoxification treatments. Particles and colloids, antibody fragments (Fab), and indirect treatment methods such as macroemulsions, are currently being developed or employed as detoxification therap...

The use of pericardial sac as a cardiometer--a technique for recording the effects of DRUGS ON HEART IN SITU.

When one is interested in the study, particularly the screening, of cardioactive agents, one needs to have the information on the effects of the concerned drug on (i) the rate, (ii) rhythm, (iii) force of contraction and (iv) output of the heart. The methods commonly used to study the effects of drugs on the heart in situ are Cushny's myocardiograph, glass cardiometry and electrocardiography (3...
