Recurrent or severe infection with Herpes Viruses may reflect an acquired underlying immune deficiency such as AIDS/HIV-1 infection but also is typical of some types of hereditary immune deficiency presenting in childhood. In utero exposures to reactivation or primary maternal infection with herpes simplex type 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV2) and cytomegalovirus (CMV or HHV-4) remain a significant cause of infant mortality are also a major cause of both congenital deafness (CMV) as well as other pediatric morbidity and mortality (HSV and CMV). Molecular defects have been identified in toll-receptors, related interferon signaling pathways associated with herpes simplex encephalitis andshingles due to VZV (varicella zoster virus) as well as defects in NK (natural killer)-cells associated with overwhelming EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus or Human Herpes 4) infection in the syndrome of XLP (X-Linked Immunoproliferative syndrome). Specific defects in these and other mechanisms of herpes pathogenesis remain an active subject of research, however it is clear that additional therapy options for severe herpes virus infection are needed in both the adult and pediatric population.

Up-Regulation of Integrinsn α2β1 and α3β1 Expression in Human Foreskin Fibroblast Cells after In-Vitro Infection with Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
The interaction of Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) with human fetal foreskin fibroblast (HFFF) cell was studied using a recent isolate of HSV-1 which was propagated in Hep-2 cells. HFFF cells were challenged with HSV-1 with a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 1 virus/cell for 24 hours. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that HSV-1 challenged HFFF cells expressed increased levels of α2β1...
متن کاملThe Changing Epidemiology of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Infection: The Associated Effects on the Incidence of Ocular Herpes
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) with a worldwide distribution has been reported in all human populations, resulting in a clinical spectrum of infections. Although HSV type 2 (HSV-2) is known as the most common cause of genital herpes, an increasing number of cases with genital herpes are caused by HSV-1. The present study aimed to discuss the changes in the epidemiology of HSV-1 infection i...

On October 16, 2007, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved raltegravir for treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents in treatment-experienced adult patients who have evidence of viral replication and HIV-1 strains resistant to multiple antiretroviral agents. Raltegravir is first in a novel class of antiretroviral dru...
متن کاملEffects of Sodium Valproate on the Replication of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1: An in Vitro Study
Background: Sodium valproate, an anticonvulsant drug, is reported to stimulate Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 and Human cytomegalovirus replication. Since epileptic patients undergoing sodium valproate therapy may suffer from various virus infections, the effect of this drug on replication of viruses especially those affecting neuronal tissues such as Herpes simplex virus type 1 is worthy ...
