چکیده

Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF) and Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) are both endogenous swelling processes that can affect concrete. They lead to a decrease of the mechanical properties, cracking and unexpected deformations and thus induce severe concerns in terms of structural integrity for affected structures. This paper describes an experimental investigation concerning the mechanical effects of DEF and AAR acting separately or simultaneously. The effect of the water supply conditions is investigated. Finally a quantitative model is proposed to account for swelling of materials affected by both DEF and AAR. with EDF (Electricité de France). Using large scale laboratory specimens, it aims to quantify at a macroscopic scale the mechanical effects of DEF and AAR acting separately or simultaneously (Martin et al. 2008). This paper proposes an experimental quantification of DEF and DEF-AAR processes in terms of kinetics and ultimate expansion in materials stored in various water supply conditions. To explain the macroscopic expansion of the materials, a quantitative model is proposed to describe the swellings of a material affected by DEF and AAR.

Efficacy of Aluminum Hydroxides as Inhibitors of Alkali-Silica Reaction

A comparative study of amorphous and crystalline forms of commercial aluminum hydroxides as inhibitors of alkalisilica reactions in Portland cement mortars has been performed. It was found that at dosages of 1% to 3%, amorphous aluminum hydroxide can efficiently inhibit alkali-silica expansion of Portland cement compositions. High inhibiting activity of amorphous Al(OH)3 additives may be explai...

Delayed Ettringite Formation in Fly Ash Concrete under Moist Curing Conditions

During the hydration of cement, tricalcium aluminate (C3A) reacts with gypsum and forms ettringite (AFt). Once all gypsum is consumed, ettringite can further react with remaining C3A and form monosulfate (AFm) at 1–2 days. Normally, at early ages, ettringite all transfers to AFm phase. After several months or years, ettringite can form again if a new source of sulfate becomes available in the p...

Analysis of Durability of Advanced Cementitious Materials for Rigid Pavement Construction in California

The cementitious materials under consideration by Caltrans for rigid pavement construction may be classified into four categories: Portland cements and blends, calcium aluminate cements and blends, calcium sulfoaluminate cements, and fly ash-based cements. With the exception of Portland cements, most of the cementitious materials under consideration have not been extensively used for pavement c...

Developing numerical algorithm and a new program for simulating alkali aggregate reaction in mass concrete

Nowadays, Alkali Aggregate Reaction is considered as one of the most dangerous weak points of concrete and its occurrence has been widely reported in various structures. In the current study, a program is developed for predicting and examining the effects of mentioned reaction on the three-dimensional analysis of concrete structures such as arch dams. In this regard, a program provided for dam ...

Theoretical and experimental validation of a simple method to reproduce representative DEF-prone conditions in laboratory

Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF) is a possible autogenous expansive reaction of concrete. It can affect materials that have experienced temperatures higher than about 65°C at early age. This temperature increase can be the result of the cement heat of hydration in massive structures where the heat transfers are particularly low. To understand the effects of DEF, it is necessary to be able to ...
