Structural properties and thermal conductivity of crystalline Ge clathrates

چکیده
Structural analysis and thermal conductivity data on Sr8Ga16Ge30 and Eu8Ga16Ge30 crystals are reported. These compounds form in the cubic space group Pm 3̄n with lattice parameters of 10.721~2! and 10.703~2! Å respectively. Single-crystal x-ray diffraction and structural refinement indicate that the randomly distributed Ga and Ge atoms form a tetrahedrally bonded three-dimensional net in whose cavities the ‘‘guest’’ Sr or Eu atoms reside. The ‘‘guest’’ atoms in the smaller of these polyhedra ~dodecahedra! have spherical thermal ellipsoids while those in the larger polyhedra ~tetrakaidecahedra! display relatively large and highly anisotropic thermal ellipsoids. The low-thermal conductivity of these compounds at low temperatures is attributable to the disorder introduced by the dynamic ‘‘rattling’’ introduced by these ‘‘guest’’ atoms inside the polyhedra. The potential of this material system for thermoelectric applications is also discussed.

Results of atomic-scale simulations are presented including thermal conductivity, elastic moduli, diffusion, and adhesion. This type of simulations is most conveniently performed with the MedeA computational environment, which comprises experimental structure databases together with building tools to construct models of complex solids, surfaces, and interfaces for both crystalline and amorphous...
متن کاملTheoretical study of the lattice thermal conductivity in Ge framework semiconductors.
The lattice thermal conductivity of Ge clathrates is investigated by evaluating the linear response theory heat current correlation functions using molecular dynamics. Clathrate crystals with and without guest atoms in their fullerane cages are studied. In comparison with that of diamond-phase Ge, the clathrate conductivity is reduced by approximately 1 order of magnitude due to the open framew...
متن کاملSuperconductivity and Magnetism in Silicon and Germanium Clathrates
Clathrates are materials containing closed polyhedral cages stacked to form crystalline frameworks. With Si, Ge, and Sn atoms populating these frameworks, a wide variety of electronic and vibrational properties can be produced in these materials, by substitution upon framework sites or through incorporation of ions in cage-center positions. Commonly-formed structures include the type I, type II...
متن کاملMicrostructure, mechanical and thermal properties of chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics based on Se-As-Ge system nucleated by Sn
In particular, chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics are new materials that exhibit good transparency in infrared region (0.8-12µm). We can overcome the main weakness of these glasses by improving the hardness through controlling crystallization. In this paper, we report results of a study on chalcogenide glasses in the ternary system of As-Se-Ge with nominal composition of Snx (Se...
