RR Lyrae variables in Galactic globular clusters V. The case of M3 pulsators. Abstract. We use our synthetic Horizontal Branch (HB) procedure to approach the debated problem concerning the adequacy of canonical HB stellar models to account for the observed peaked distribution of RR Lyrae fundamentalised periods in the globular cluster M3. We find that by assuming a suitable bimodal mass distribution , canonical models account for the observed period distribution. In particular, the best fit model, out of nine random extractions, reaches a 99.9 % Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) probability. We also attempt a prediction of the relative distribution of variables in fundamental and first overtone pulsators, reaching a rather satisfactory agreement. However, one finds that canonical models outnumber by roughly a factor of two the observed number of red HB stars. Possible solutions for this discrepancy are outlined. Alternative evolutionary scenarios are also briefly discussed.

A ug 2 00 9 An Oosterhoff Analysis of the Galactic Bulge Field RR Lyrae stars : Implications On Their Absolute Magnitudes
We present an analysis of the period-V -amplitude plane for RR0 Lyrae stars (fundamental mode pulsators) with “normal” light curves in the bulge using the MACHO bulge fields. Although bulge globular clusters have RR Lyraes that divide into two reasonable distinct groups according to the average period of the RR0 Lyraes (Oosterhoff 1939), there is no evidence of a gap between Oosterhoff I and II...
متن کاملRR Lyrae Stars in NGC 6388 and NGC 6441: A New Oosterhoff Group?
NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 are anomalies among Galactic globular clusters in that they cannot be readily placed into either Oosterhoff group I or Oosterhoff group II despite their significant numbers of RR Lyrae variables. The mean pulsation periods, &angl0;Pab&angr0;, of their RRab variables, at 0.71 and 0.76 days, respectively, are even larger than for Oosterhoff II clusters. Moreover, Oosterhoff ...
متن کاملLyrae stars in four globular clusters in the Fornax dwarf galaxy
We have surveyed four of the globular clusters in the Fornax dwarf galaxy (clusters 1, 2, 3, and 5) for RR Lyrae stars, using archival F555W and F814W Hubble Space Telescope observations. We identify 197 new RR Lyrae stars in these four clusters, and 13 additional candidate horizontal branch variable stars. Although somewhat restricted by our short observational baseline, we derive periods and ...

I point out that the Oosterhoff dichotomy for globular cluster and field RR Lyrae (RRL) stars may place the strongest constraints so far on the number of dwarf spheroidal-like protogalactic fragments that may have contributed to the formation of the Galactic halo. The first calibration of the RRL period-luminosity relation in I, J , H, K taking evolutionary effects into account is provided. Pro...
متن کاملLyrae variables in Galactic globular clusters IV . Synthetic HB and RR
We present theoretical predictions concerning horizontal branch stars in globular clusters, including RR Lyrae variables, as derived from synthetic procedures collating evolutionary and pulsational constraints. On this basis, we explore the predicted behavior of the pulsators as a function of the horizontal branch morphology and over the metallicity range Z=0.0001 to 0.006, revealing an encoura...
