چکیده

In the Punjab it is very rarely seen in the domesticated state. It is also possible that this ciliate is not a common inhabitant of the intestine of the Indian pig, as it could not be found in the faeces of three pigs examined from near Kasauli, Punjab. I have also been unable to find it in the stools of six monkeys. Bentham (1920) recorded its presence in large numbers in association with Entamceba histolytica cysts and Ankylostoma eggs in the faeces of an Indian Christian from Bihar who

Prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in captive wildlife species of India

Campylobacteriosis is an important zoonotic disease and the prevalence of Campylobacter is largely unknown in the wildlife of India. A total of 370 samples, comprising of 314 fresh faecal samples from apparently healthy captive wild animals and birds, 30 stool swabs from animal care takers and 26 samples of the animals’ food and water were collected from G. B. Pant High Altitude Zoo, Nainital, ...

But when faeces from the monkey Silenus (Macacus) rhesus, which are invariably crammed with blastocystis, are inoculated into the above medium and incubated at 37?C.?the optimum temperature for growth of most of the intestinal protozoa of warm-blooded hosts?the fungus develops with very great rapidity, with consequent destruction of any Balantidium coli which may be pres...

Investigation of gastrointestinal parasites of herbivores at Dhaka National Zoological Garden of Bangladesh

A total of 52 fecal samples were collected from 21 herbivores at Dhaka zoo during January to May, 2012 to investigate the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of herbivores. Overall prevalence of parasitic infection was 76.9%, of which 61.5% were positive for helminths and 55.8% were positive for protozoa. The identified parasites were Balantidium coli (55.8%), Paramphistomum sp. (36.5%), F...

Evaluating a murine model of endometritis using uterine isolates of Escherichia coli from postpartum buffalo

Ascending infection of the uterus with Gram-negative bacteria is responsible for postpartum endometritis in cattle and buffalo and can adversely affect fertility. Development of a laboratory animal model for bovine endometritis would facilitate the understanding of the pathogenesis as it is difficult to conduct controlled experimentation in the native host. In the present study, 30 virgin Swiss...

Novel Insights into the Genetic Diversity of Balantidium and Balantidium-like Cyst-forming Ciliates

Balantidiasis is considered a neglected zoonotic disease with pigs serving as reservoir hosts. However, Balantidium coli has been recorded in many other mammalian species, including primates. Here, we evaluated the genetic diversity of B. coli in non-human primates using two gene markers (SSrDNA and ITS1-5.8SDNA-ITS2). We analyzed 49 isolates of ciliates from fecal samples originating from 11 s...
