How to Interpret Common Hematologic and Serum Biochemistry Differences Between Neonatal Foals and Mature Horses

نویسنده

چکیده

There are important and significant differences in normal hematologic and serum biochemical parameters between neonatal foals and mature horses. Failure to recognize these differences can lead to erroneous interpretation of neonatal clinical pathologic values. Surgical management of complete diaphyseal third metacarpal and metatarsal bone fractures: clinical outcome in 10 mature horses and 11 foals.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Osteosynthesis of third metacarpal (McIII) and third metatarsal (MtIII) bone fractures in horses is a surgical challenge and complications surrounding the repair are common. Retrospective studies evaluating surgical repair, complications and outcome are necessary to increase knowledge and improve success of long bone fracture repair in the horse. OBJECTIVES To eva...

Growth Rate of Thoroughbred Horses during First Six Months of Life

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of sex, season and year of birth on growth rate of biometric measurements and body weight gain of Thoroughbred foals during first six months of life. 103 Thoroughbred foals (53 colts and 50 fillies) from Golejewko Stud born between 2006 and 2008, were used in this study. Thoroughbred foals born in winter months were characterized by significantly ...

Equine neonates have attenuated humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to a killed adjuvanted vaccine compared to adult horses.

The objectives of this study were to compare relative vaccine-specific serum immunoglobulin concentrations, vaccine-specific lymphoproliferative responses, and cytokine profiles of proliferating lymphocytes between 3-day-old foals, 3-month-old foals, and adult horses after vaccination with a killed adjuvanted vaccine. Horses were vaccinated intramuscularly twice at 3-week intervals with a vacci...

Experimental infection of neonatal foals with Rhodococcus equi triggers adult-like gamma interferon induction.

Rhodococcus equi is a facultative intracellular pathogen that causes pneumonia in young foals but does not induce disease in immunocompetent adult horses. Clearance of R. equi depends mainly on gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) production by T lymphocytes, whereas the predominance of interleukin 4 (IL-4) is detrimental. Young foals, like neonates of many other species, are generally deficient in the...

Hypertrophy and physiological death of equine chondrocytes in vitro.

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY Equine osteochondrosis results from a failure of endochondral ossification during skeletal growth. Endochondral ossification involves chondrocyte proliferation, hypertrophy and death. Until recently no culture system was available to study these processes in equine chondrocytes. OBJECTIVE To optimise an in vitro model in which equine chondrocytes can be induced to ...
