چکیده

This paper presents the results of a study of the expression of word-level prosody in Jordanian Arabic. The study focuses on the durational, spectral, and fundamental frequency correlates of stress and word-"nal juncture in the speech of four speakers. Speakers exhibit extensive "nal lengthening e!ects and a smaller e!ect of stress and penultimate lengthening. Stress lengthening correlates with higher "rst formants, while penultimate lengthening does not. Analyses of fundamental frequency patterns support an analysis in terms of pitch accents associated with stressed syllables and juncture-marking phrasal pitch speci"cations. Finally, lengthening e!ects are sensitive to higher level prosodic juncture. These results are discussed in comparison with similar results in studies of English speakers. ( 1999 Academic Press

Tone, Intonation, Stress and Duration in Navajo

The phonological categories of tone, stress, duration and intonation interact in interesting and complex ways in the world’s languages. One reason for this is that they all use the phonetic cues of pitch and duration in different ways in order to be understood as phonologically meaningful. The Navajo language has unique prosodic characteristics that make it particularly valuable for the study o...

A Predictive Approach to the Analysis of Intonation in Discourse

This paper presents an approach to the analysis of prosody in French discourse, based on a prediction of the unmarked default intonation matching the lexical and syntactic properties of the sequence. By confronting this default intonation with the actual intonation used by the speaker, all marked intonation elements can be identified. The prediction of default intonation takes into account word...

The Function of Pitch Range Variations in Samples of Emotional Expressions in Persian

This study aims at investigating the interface between emotion and intonation patterns (more specifically, duration and pitch amplitude of speech).
