Bioavailability and Antagonists of Trace Minerals in Ruminant Metabolism

چکیده
Modern analytical techniques and instrumentation make it possible to accurately determine trace mineral concentration in feed and animal tissues. Unfortunately, however, such determinations provide no information on utilization of the minerals by animals. Utilization involves the concept of bioavailability and is critical in the selection of a suitable source of the mineral. In terms of trace minerals, bioavailability may be defined as the proportion of an ingested mineral that is absorbed, transported to its site of action, and converted to the physiologically active species (O’Dell, 1983). Traditionally, trace mineral bioavailability studies have been conducted at deficient dietary levels, usually with purified or semi-purified diets. The mineral sources are then added at graded levels and response criteria measured. In general, the bioavailability of a mineral element in a particular source is determined relative to its functional availability from a standard source. Use of a standard source allows expression of bioavailability in terms of relative biological availability (Miller, 1983). Bioavailability can be affected by a number of factors including animal species, physiological state, previous nutrition, interactions with dietary nutrients and ingredients, choice of response criteria, choice of standard source, and chemical form and solubility of the mineral element. For more detailed information on the effects of each of these variables and their effects on specific minerals the reader is referred to a recent Academic Press publication on bioavailability of nutrients for animals by Ammerman et a/. (1 995).

Trace minerals have long been identified as essential dietary components for domestic livestock species. Included in the category of essential trace minerals (or microminerals) are chromium, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, and zinc. Numerous biochemical reactions require trace minerals for proper function. It has been well documented that deficiencies of v...
متن کاملComparison of SQM trace minerals with inorganic trace minerals on performance and bioavailability as influenced by an antagonist
The optimum value of trace minerals is how well they can serve their biological function in an animal’s body. For trace minerals to keep an animal in good health and performing to their genetic potential, they have to be available for absorption in the small intestines. There are a multitude of compounds and factors that will interact with individual trace minerals that have the potential to re...

The trace minerals zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium are components of a wide variety of enzymes and proteins that support metabolism, growth, production, and reproduction. Trace mineral supplements are added to dairy cattle rations to prevent mineral deficiencies, and supplementation has traditionally been provided in the form of inorganic salts. When these inorganic salts dissociate in th...
متن کاملAdvancements in Ruminant Trace Mineral Nutrition
Major advances in the field of trace mineral nutrition occurred in the twenty century. All of the trace minerals recognized as being important in ruminant nutrition were first shown to be essential in the 1900's with the exception of iron. Between 1920 and 1960 naturally occurring deficiencies of iodine, copper, cobalt, manganese, selenium, and zinc were first reported in cattle. Today it is co...
